When I was seventeen, this incident occurred...

Three to four times a week, I would use the gym, then take the bus home.

On a Sunday, I had to wait longer for another bus because I had just missed my first one.

My parents would have picked up the phone, but they were out for the evening. And cab fares were higher.

I made the choice to wait at the bus shelter while sitting down.

It was a chilly night, and the ground was just beginning to be dusted with snow.

I pulled out my phone and started listening to music, because my bus was taking longer than usual.

A little over an hour had gone. I had not seen anyone at all, and it was really cold.

That didn't happen until I caught a glimpse of something in the corner of my eye.

He was a spooky man who was cautiously approaching me while wearing several layers of clothes.

I avoided looking at him since I knew it would make him the center of attention.

He took a seat at the opposite end of the shelter and simply looked at me.

Something seemed strange about him.

He had the impression of being either intoxicated or high.

He then enquired,

‘’When will the bus arrive?’’

I removed my headphones and remarked,

"I believe the snow is to blame for the delay."

He gave me a long look before turning to himself and muttered. I pretended to be on my phone since he was beginning to frighten me severely. After a short while, I turned to look again. He had gotten nearer to me...

I briefly turned my head away before hearing the sound of him getting closer. I approached him and said,

"You okay over there?"

He stared at me with glossy eyes, lifted his arm and leaned towards me. Immediately, I grabbed my bag and ran as he fell to the ground. I made every effort not to turn around as I sprinted down the road.

I continued till I reached the next bus stop. I looked back to see if he was still there, but he had left, so I proceeded to sit down.

I waited for the bus while resting my head against the back of the glass, feeling relieved.

*knock knock knock knock*

I jerked, and when I turned back, he was still looking at me through the glass.

‘’What in the name of God is wrong with you?’’

Then he began to make his way beyond the shelter in my direction.

"I'm warning you! Stay back."

I shouted as I retreated out of fear. Despite wanting to flee, I was unable to do so since I had left my luggage at the shelter. The man suddenly rushed at me, and I hastily backed away.

He hit the floor on his face. I froze in disbelief before noticing that his face was bleeding.

Nothing I did managed to gain a reaction from him. I called the police and paramedics and they arrived shortly after. When I explained what had transpired to them, they informed me that the man was using prescription medication.

In his wallet, they discovered a picture of him and his son. We concluded that since the child resembled me so much, he thought I was him.

I subsequently found out that he lost his son in a custody dispute and lost control of himself.

That was the last I saw of him before they took him away for treatment.

I soon obtained my driver's license and have not boarded a bus again.

I truly hope he got better and is reunited with his son.
