“Ahh!”

The high-pitched sound pierces through the otherwise calm night.

Walking home from the late shift, I stop on the sidewalk, listening for any more screams, not having to wait long before two more threaten to burst my eardrums.

I run up and down the street, searching for the source of the sound.

“Let go of me!”

I slow my pace, spotting two shrouded figures tussling in a dark alleyway behind my favorite Italian restaurant.

The more petite figure is obviously a female, smaller than me, while the other is a male trying to yank something from her grip.

“Hey!” I call out, walking toward them, “Leave the woman alone!”

The man turns his gaze to me. “What are you gonna do about it, honey.”

I clench my jaw and ball my fists. “I’m gonna make you wish you hadn’t left home, sweetheart.”

Scoffing, he charges at me, but I sidestep him effortlessly.

I smirk, “Is that all you got, asshole?”

He swings his fist, but I block him and use his momentum to ram his head into the dumpster beside us.

I then grab him by his leather jacket and toss him onto the sidewalk. “If I catch you doing this shit again, I’ll make the pain so much worse.”

He quickly runs off, flipping me off.

Like that would offend me.

I go to check to see if the woman is okay, but she must have bolted when I confronted the asshat.

I sigh as I continue my way back home, my body humming and my mouth curving upward. It felt good to help someone, even if you got zero thanks.

Maybe I’d do it again.
