Monstrous Humanity

“Thank you, sixteen. Let them in.”

Sixteen’s my favorite of all of them. She’s soft blue. Most of the crew are mirrored, but I don’t like seeing my reflection in their bodies. My imperfections.

Accompanied by robotic crew, my parents were one of countless couples on commercially-funded smallship missions. They died in a freak accident when I was young. It’s taken years to return “home” to a colonized base.

The door opens. In swarms animal repugnance—hair, sweat, body odor. Overwhelmed, I cower. Eventually, they leave.

Is it any wonder I steal the ship? Alone in space, there are no humans.
