Panicked, my eyes dart to Midge and hers to the ogre beneath us. It pauses, then lumbers its stupid self down the corridor.

My foot slips on the slick obsidian unsettling my ridged perch. I flinch, my fairy wings scratched jumping down to the floor. The muggy air makes it difficult to breathe.

The cave is brimming with gold and precious things, but Midge has a plan; Midge always has a plan.

“I’m casting the spell to find the baby,” Midge whispers, articulating her fingers.

“There it is!” I point.

Our cellophane-thin wings push through thick air, flying low.

Where’re the guards? I think.

Mounds of gold begin to move, undulating below us. Something’s wrong.

I push Midge as dragon jaws explode up from the mounds, snapping at us from below.

“Grab it!” She shouts, dodging basilisk bites.

“Got it!” I shout back, orb in hand. “Let’s go!”

Steam wisps show a vent, an escape to the forest, and home.

-----

“It's hatching!”

“Ah, Midge? What locater spell did you use?”

“Find a lost baby. Why?”

Cracking and chipping, a tiny dragon’s tail breaks through.

“What's the plan, Midge?"

And will it now imprint upon these two fairies & provide a rapprochement between the two species? And how will they find the lost baby for whom they were looking?
