"The cold can kill you. Even I know that much," said a voice from the shadows.

"Yeah, I thought you'd like it", another voice retorted.

"We're in a different dimension after all" The first one continued speaking as if he hadn't heard their counterpart.

"You might be able to get around, but if we go too deep into the dark world, no one will be able to find us. There's nothing to keep us safe here"

Another figure stepped out of the shadows. She was beautiful with long blond hair and a bright smile.

"I've got an idea", she said as she looked at him.

"What do you think about running away?" The other shadow laughed.

"Running where? What have we got left to run from?" He asked. She smirked as she pulled up her sleeve, revealing a glowing red mark. He raised his eyebrow.

"Why do you have that on your arm?" He questioned.

She sighed. "Well, I guess you're going to have to see for yourself..."

She smiled mischievously as she put her hand up to her face. He looked over to what was on her hand as he saw a similar-looking marking in a slightly lighter shade of red on her wrist. They both had matching marks. He then turned towards her with wide eyes.

"Wait, you..." he trailed off before turning back around towards her and walking away. "No, we can't."

She followed him quietly, following behind him until they reached some trees. It would have been easier for her to just run through them like she normally did, but this place was dangerous. This world wasn't even real, and everything they knew was wrong. She tried to convince herself that it would be alright, though, because she knew what happened to those who were afraid and ran away when things got hard. She didn't want that for herself or anyone else, so she stayed there in silence while he sat down and looked out across the frozen lake.

She watched him from the corner of her eye and decided that she wanted to help him. His expression told her everything. It was sad, confused and hurt, just like her own. She sat beside him without uttering a word. The matching marks meant they were connected by a soulmate bond, which only happens once in every hundred years. But also, they have powers that they can use together. Every time a soulmate dies, a pair of red and black soul marks appear. When a person is killed, and the body turns to ash, the two are marked, and the soul mark will turn black instead of red like the one on his hand.

"This is not what you expected, and using our powers without practice can be dangerous. But," he paused, taking a breath in and letting it out slowly, "we'll have to take a risk".

He finally looked away from the view of the lake and looked at the person next to him. Their matching marks.

"But we need to leave now. Before someone finds us." he finished. she nodded in agreement.

She took his hand and held it tightly as she stood up and helped him to stand as well. She started walking away from the frozen lake but stopped short before she got very far away. Her heart clenched in pain, realizing that soon, she'd be alone again. What can she expect, they are two strangers, and once she helps them, they will part ways. She followed him back to the other shadows.

"We need to get out of here right now. And we have to run away now! You will all have to touch us for this to work. Then run faster than anything to the end."

The two of them touched each other's arms, and the red marks shone brighter. A red and black glow surrounded them, fueling them with energy and power. They then jumped into the darkness, knowing that if something happened to their soulmate, it would cause an effect on all those around them.

When their feet hit the ground, they began running faster than they ever had. As they ran, everything faded to grey. Then it changed from grey to orange. Orange, then blue, then green, then black, then purple. It faded into white before the world went completely black and everything disappeared.

They woke up lying on a cold hard floor in an abandoned warehouse. It was night, and there was light filtering through the cracks in the ceiling.

"Are we…" The girl sitting next to him couldn't finish her sentence. Both were still trying to make sense of their situation. They were all alone in this building, lying in a large pile of boxes and crates.

"We made it", said the other shadows. "We're finally back to ... hmmm, guys, where are we?"

They looked around at their surroundings. In the centre of the room was a circle painted onto the floor with the same symbol from their marks in ink. There was a symbol for fire on the side too. A small piece of paper was floating between them. A piece of paper with writing on it that they could barely decipher.

"Welcome to the future,'" it read. "This is a new start. Let's go!' That's all it says". 'Future'? The four shadows looked at each other. 'New beginning', 'new start'. 'This is a new start'. Those words echoed in the air.

She looked at her soulmate, wondering if she will be alone in this new start. Wondering how it could happen when they have just met. He seemed thoughtful as he looked over at her and then back at the room. He came closer to her, and she could hear her heart beat faster. Why is her body reacting like this?

"I think we can hear each other's thoughts." She looked at him with big terrified eyes nodding. "This is the beginning of our story, isn't it?" he whispered further.

She nodded in agreement. She looked around at their surroundings again. Several doors were leading outside, some boarded up, and others broken down. She only hoped she could trust him and that no is chasing them anymore.
