Mariska’s Journey

Chapter 2. Escape From Town

By Jeremy Edmund Published about a year ago 5 min read

Mariska and Lyra navigated Britztham's snow-shrouded streets, urgency growing with each step. They had to escape before Count Alfred's men realized Mariska was gone.

"Aunt Lyra, how much farther?" Mariska asked, breath visible in the chilly air.

"Very close, miss. Stay vigilant." Lyra glanced around, her eyes darting between alleyways.

Suddenly, a bell pierced the air, echoing off buildings. Lyra's grip on Mariska's arm tightened.

"What's that?" Mariska asked, alarm rising.

"Town gate alert," Lyra whispered. "Guardians are sealing the gates. We're trapped."

Mariska's heart sank. "What do we do?"

Lyra's expression turned determined. "Find another way out."

They quickened their pace, weaving through narrow alleys. Snow crunched beneath their feet.

"We need to reach the East Gate," Lyra whispered, her voice urgent. "It's our only chance."

As they turned a corner, the imposing town gate loomed before them. Guardians in heavy cloaks and armed with swords blocked the entrance.

"Lyra, what now?" Mariska whispered, panic creeping in.

Lyra scanned their surroundings, her eyes locking onto a nearby market stall.

"Follow me," she whispered, pulling Mariska toward the stall.

The vendor, an elderly woman, looked up. "Lyra, what's amiss?"

"No time to explain," Lyra replied, her hands swiftly untying the stall's canvas cover.

Mariska's eyes widened as Lyra lifted the canvas, revealing a hidden passageway.

"Inside, miss," Lyra urged.

Mariska hesitated, then scrambled into the narrow passage. Lyra followed, the canvas falling behind them.

They found themselves in darkness, the only sound the muffled voices of the guardians.

"Where does this lead?" Mariska whispered.

Lyra's voice was barely audible. "Outside Britztham. Our only hope."

As they crawled through the passage, Mariska's heart pounded. “Would we escape safely, or would Count Alfred's men capture us?”

Suddenly, Lyra froze, her hand clamped over Mariska's mouth.

"What is it?" Mariska whispered.

Lyra's eyes gleamed in the darkness. "Footsteps. Coming our way."

Lyra's grip on Mariska's mouth tightened. "Silence, miss!" she whispered.

The footsteps grew louder, echoing through the passageway. Mariska's heart raced.

A guardian's voice boomed. "Search every inch! Count Alfred wants her alive!"

Lyra slowly released Mariska's mouth. "Stay close," she whispered.

As the guardians approached, Lyra pulled out a dagger from her cloak.

Mariska's eyes widened. "Aunt Lyra, no!"

Lyra's expression hardened. "We must protect ourselves."

The first guardian emerged from the darkness, sword drawn. Lyra lunged forward.

A scuffle ensued. Lyra's dagger clashed with the guardian's sword.

Mariska watched in horror as Lyra dodged the guardian's blows.

With a swift strike, Lyra plunged her dagger into the guardian's chest.

He crumpled, lifeless.

Mariska gasped. "Aunt Lyra!"

Lyra grabbed Mariska's hand. "We must move!"

They scrambled deeper into the passage. Footsteps echoed behind them.

More guardians.

Lyra's grip tightened. "Faster, miss!"

As they turned a corner, a sliver of light appeared ahead.

"Freedom," Lyra whispered.

But another guardian emerged, blocking their escape.

Lyra unsheathed her dagger once more.

Mariska's heart pounded. “Would we survive?”

Mariska feels fear.

Lyra clashed with the guardian, her daggers flashing in the faint light. The guardian's sword swooped down, barely missing Lyra's shoulder. She dodged, her blade slicing through the guardian's cloak.

With a swift kick, Lyra sent the guardian stumbling. She seized the moment, striking his exposed chest. The guardian's armor deflected the blow, but Lyra's relentless assault pushed him back.

Mariska watched, awestruck, as Lyra parried each attack. The guardian's sword clashed against Lyra's daggers, sparks flying.

Lyra's eyes blazed with determination. "Run, miss!" she yelled.

The guardian lunged, his sword aimed at Lyra's heart. She sidestepped, her dagger slashing across his wrist. The sword clattered to the ground.

Seizing the opening, Lyra delivered a crushing kick, sending the guardian crashing into the passage wall.

Mariska slipped past the combatants, into the fading light. A blast of cold air hit her as she emerged from the passage.

Mariska sprinted through knee-deep snow, pine trees looming like sentinels. Branches creaked beneath the snow's weight, echoing through the forest.

She glanced back. Lyra fought valiantly, but more guardians closed in.

Mariska's heart ached, but Lyra's determination fueled her own.

Mariska pushed forward, her boots sinking into drifts.

The forest grew denser, snowflakes dancing around her. Mariska stumbled, her ankle twisting.

She recovered, breathless. A glance over her shoulder revealed Lyra breaking free from the passage.

Lyra's eyes locked onto Mariska. "Run, miss!" she yelled.

Mariska sprinted, pine branches slapping her face. Snow blinded her, but she pressed onward.

Suddenly, Lyra appeared beside her, gasping. "Faster...miss!”

Their footsteps echoed through the forest, pursued by the guardians' shouts.

Mariska's lungs burned, but Lyra's determination fueled her own.

They burst into a clearing, a frozen lake glinting before them.

"Across!" Lyra shouted.

Mariska hesitated, then followed Lyra onto the ice. Creaking beneath their feet, the lake threatened to give way.

Mariska's terror grew as they traveled across the ice lake. The creaking ice threatened to betray them.

Five guardians emerged from the woodland with swords drawn.

Lyra positioned herself between Mariska and her pursuers.

"Run, miss!" Lyra yelled, her eyes ablaze. Mariska sprints, but her feet feel heavy on the ice.

Guardians closed in. Lyra raised her hands and whispered incantations. A black radiance surrounded her.

Mariska's eyes widened when Lyra shifted. Her body distorted as dark wings unfolded. Hundreds of vampiric bats rushed from Lyra's body and engulfed the guardians. Shrieks rang over the lake as bats clawed and bitted at each other.

Mariska staggered, afraid. "Aunt Lyra, what's happening?"

Lyra's voice, suddenly ominous, said, "Run, Mariska!" The bats swirled and attacked the guardians.

The bats' attack terrified the guardians and left them feeling blind. The guardians' garments were torn, and their bodies were badly harmed.

Mariska fled, her heart racing. Was Lyra still human?

The lake creaked ominously. Mariska's footsteps echoed through the chaos.

Suddenly, Lyra reformed beside her, grasping her hand. "Faster, miss!"

The guardians fell and were unable to move their bodies.

Mariska and Lyra reached the lake's edge. Safety beckoned.

But Mariska's gaze lingered on Lyra, uncertainty gripping her heart.

Mariska's eyes widened in fear as Lyra's stare focused on her own, hunger burning inside.

"Aunt Lyra, what's wrong?" Mariska faltered and backed away.

Lyra's smile curled to show razor-sharp teeth. "Your blood, Mariska...so potent."

Mariska turned to speed through the forest. Lyra's laughter resonated, hauntingly. Branches splintered beneath Mariska's feet as she urgently sought refuge.

Lyra's footsteps closed in. "Your bloodline's power...I crave it," Lyra murmured, her breath chilly against Mariska's neck.

Mariska dodged, dodging among the trees. Lyra's grasp just missed her.

The clearing beckoned. Mariska dashed out into the open, her lungs burning.

Lyra descended with wings stretched wide. Mariska tripped, slipping on roots.

Mariska understood her protector had turned into her worst nightmare as Lyra approached her with fangs bared.
