Marigold fields

Oh to lay amongst the golden flowers of summer

By Lawrence Edward HincheePublished 5 years ago 2 min read

My family and I went on vacation to the United States for two months. We were going to drive from the west coast to the east coast. My parents planned a lot of stops and fun things to do. My name is Fritz and I am ten years of age. I have two brothers who are thirteen and sixteen. As we were driving through one state, I could not believe how beautiful it was with all of the marigolds I saw. Fields and fields of the prettiest flowers and I wondered how they were so beautiful. Just as I had wondered how the tulips in my country of Holland could be so splendid and gorgeous. I would say that God's paint brush always amazed me.

As we headed east from California, we arrived at our first destination, the Grand Canyon. I was excited but I was left in the care of my two brothers. I got out the car and went down to pick a few marigolds to take back to Holland with me. I didn't know bringing in foreign plants would be classified as illegal until later. We spent two days at the Grand Canyon.

Good God The Rocky Mountains look almost as big as the the Alps do. I sure enjoyed my time there, but it was cold for it to be the summer. Here we found the flower Columbine, such a small and delicate flower, but yet beautiful. My God, it seemed like it took a month to exit Kansas. Jesus it was five hundred ten miles from border to border, with nothing but sunflowers, wheat fields, wind turbines, tumble weeds ,and hay. Seriously, who lives is a state like that?

We arrived at the famed arches of St. Louis what a time we had there. We went through Illinois, and Indiana, then Kentucky. Our last state to visit was West Virginia. I was impressed by its sheer beauty and size. We visited several Civil War battle ground areas. I learned a lot about American history during that time. We spent the night in West Virginia, then drove to Dulles airport the next day. I hated to leave but I knew my time was up here in America, so it was back home to my country of Holland. I hope my plants will make it through customs tomorrow.

As an American tulip time in Holland will always be one of my favorite events. Just like the marigolds in the United States they are a durable flower. I will never say the marigold is as beautiful as the tulip, nor will I say the tulip is as beautiful as the marigold. They both have different types of beauty unmatched by each other.

As we arrived back into Holland, we retrieved our bags and headed to customs. We made it through until they x-rayed my bag and found the three marigolds. The customs agent she explained how bringing plants from outside could hurt our native plants. She told me I was not in any trouble nor was I the first little boy to do this. She threw away my pretty flowers and we went about our business. I laughed to myself as we walked away because I had put the remaining bulbs in my parents suitcases.

Next year we were going to have some beautiful marigolds at our house to go with our tulips, I can't wait. Mom didn't pay attention to what her ten year old put into her suitcase, or did she?
