The Black Woman
The night is cold and her feet are numb. She runs the streets, a ghost in the night. Her skin is a dull brown, and she wears clothes that are ragged at the edges and thin enough to let the cold in. Her hair is long and black as oil, it tangles around her neck like ivy and heavy as chainmail.
She slips into an alleyway and leans against the brick wall, breathing hard. She cannot feel her toes or fingers anymore and she wonders how much longer until she will die from the cold.
No one notices her—in her alley or on the streets or in town. But she knows this; knows she is invisible to them, or doesn’t exist at all to them. She has no place in their world: one of beauty, wealth and plenty where only they can live.
Her hunger pains settle into a deadening ache and slowly are replaced by exhaustion that is so deep.
