One chilly autumn day, a little chipmunk named Leo was getting ready for his annual pumpkin patch trip. Leo is a curious, adventurous chipmunk. He loves to collect acorns and meet new friends. Before heading out to Trick or Treat with friends, he would always pick a pumpkin to carve into a Jack-o’-lantern. Leo had to get a pumpkin before he could go trick or treating.

Leo dashed off to the pumpkin patch. Leo scurried around the hilly fields. The autumn air was crisp, with a sweet, nutty scent carried along in the breeze. Leo was so excited that it still filled the pumpkin patch with various pumpkins. He saw giant pumpkins, tiny pumpkins, and short pumpkins. As Leo walked around the pumpkins he got a little overwhelmed by the number of pumpkins he looked at. He couldn’t figure out which one he wanted.

“Hello,” says a rabbit from behind one of the gigantic pumpkins. “My name is Harper. May I help you?”

Leo stumbled back in surprise; he had not seen this rabbit when he arrived. “Why yes,” answered Leo. “Can you help me pick a pumpkin to turn into a Jack-o’-lantern? I am getting a little overwhelmed.”

Harper said, “It’s okay to get overwhelmed, I do too, sometimes. If we do it together, it will feel easier. It’s good to ask for help!” Harper bounced around the maze of pumpkins. “Here you go! What do you think of this pumpkin?” asked Harper

Leo looked it over, and with a glimmer, he said, “Yes, this is the one!” Harper helped Leo buy the pumpkin with his acorn money. Afterward, Leo asked Harper if she wanted to join trick-or-treating with him and some of his friends. Harper was excited and said she would enjoy tonight’s trick-and-treat party.

After Harper told her mama, she was going out tonight, Harper and Leo set off to the next stop. Leo and Harper arrived at Grasshopper’s Woodland shop. He had the best Halloween costumes.

“May I help you?” buzzed Mr. Grasshopper. “Yes. Can you please show us your latest Halloween costumes?”

“Sure,” buzzed Mr. Grasshopper. Mr. Grasshopper hopped away to his grassy dressing room. He was gone for only a minute or two.

When he came out, he dressed as a ghost, next, he was a pirate, then a Jack-o’-lantern, a witch, and finally a unicorn.

“Do you see anything you like?” chirped Mr. Grasshopper.

“Yes we do” sang Leo and Harper.

Leo dressed as a pirate, and Harper dressed as a wicked witch.

“Would you like to join us for Trick and Treating tonight?” asks Leo

“Yes!” Mr. Grasshopper said. He decided he was going to wear the jack-o’-lantern costume.

They all went to Leo’s home to work on their Jack-o’-lantern before tonight’s trick-or-treating.

Wise Owl was waiting for them when they arrived at Leo’s tree stump home.

“Do you have a pumpkin for us to make into a jack-o’-lantern?” hooted Wise Owl

“Yes,” said Leo, “I also invited a few more friends to join us.”

“It’s always fun to make new friends,” Wise Owl hooted joyfully.

Wise Owl worked with the others to make the funniest jack-o’-lantern they’ve ever seen!

When it was time to go to the foxes for some trick-or-treating, Wise Owl dressed in his costume. He wanted to be a dinosaur.

Wise Owl hooted. “I have been reading a lot. Reading helps me learn so much about the world.”

Harper and Mr. Grasshopper came a little closer to hear the reason.

“I read birds are related to dinosaurs, like the T-rex and I thought dressing up as one this Halloween would be a hoot!”

Leo, Harper, and Mr. Grasshopper were so interested in hearing about Wise Owl’s costume they didn’t realize the time.

“Oh boy, it’s getting late!” Leo yelled. “We must be off to the Foxes’ home before it gets too dark.”

The four of them started off into the starry, brisk early evening. The wind carried the smell of pine trees and damp grass.

The Wise Owl sniffed some sweet caramel candy in the breezy night air. Halloween must be in full swing in the woodlands.

The light purple sky painted shadows on the forest grounds. The trees looked like outstretched skeleton hands reaching for them.

“It’s feeling a little spooky,” whimpered Harper.

Leo, Harper, Mr. Grasshopper, and Wise Owl all inched closer together. They could hear moaning as the wind blew through the trees as they walked.

Crash!

“What was that?” screamed Mr. Grasshopper.

Suddenly, Stanley the Raccoon came stumbling out from behind a tree. Stanley dressed up as a Hot Dog.

“Sorry to scare you all. My buns got caught on a tree branch!” Stanley cried.

They all laughed and asked Stanley if he wanted to join them for trick or treating at the Foxes. Stanley felt happy to be invited because no one from school had asked him. He felt sad that he was going to go alone. So they all continued on the journey to the Foxes’ house.

They finally arrived at the Foxes’ house. Mama Fox had extra bags and baskets for each of the new friends that Leo had brought along. Scout the Fox dressed as Dracula, while his best friend Buck the Deer dressed as a slice of pizza.

Leo was so happy to have his new friends to go trick-or-treating with. Leo thought it important to include everyone in activities and be part of the group. He and his friends felt joy and gratitude over their time together. When they finished their trick-or-treating, Leo said, “This was the best Halloween ever!”
