Learn to Swim: A Beginner's Guide
This video is designed to teach complete swimming beginners how to feel safe and comfortable in the water. It's recommended to have a buddy when starting out, especially when moving to deeper areas. Pools or calm lakes are ideal practice environments compared to the ocean. Swimming goggles can also help you relax underwater.
Step 1: Floating
Humans naturally float when their lungs are full of air. Practice floating in shallow water by curling up like a ball. Breathe out to sink, proving that your buoyancy depends on your breath. Practice floating for short intervals, gradually increasing your comfort level with your face in the water. Once comfortable, try floating on your back with your body stretched out.
Step 2: Kicking
Learn the three parts of the kick: pulling your legs in, flexing and kicking out, then bringing your feet together. Practice holding onto the pool edge to isolate leg movements. Once comfortable, use a floatation device to practice kicking while keeping your upper body afloat. Progress to kicking on your back without any support.
Step 3: Arm Movements
Practice arm movements while standing, focusing on a straight, circular motion. Once comfortable, lie on your belly and use your arms to propel yourself forward.
Step 4: Combining Arms and Legs
Synchronize arm and leg movements, gliding forward with each cycle. Initially, keep your head above water for comfort. Gradually lower your head as you become more confident, breathing in when your head is out and exhaling underwater. This improves body position and speed.
Additional Tips
Master basic swimming before venturing into deep water. Learn water treading and back floating for safety. Consider taking swimming lessons for proper technique and enjoyment.
Remember to practice regularly and have fun!
