Knife In The Dark

An Unexpected Murder

An unexpected kill!

Kyle West didn't see it coming, it was a knife in the dark, a shining blade that caught him off guard. He didn't see his killer, only the silver dagger that dug into his heart, the masked figure ran off. This was on Halloween night back in 1982 within the American town of Millett, back when slasher films first began to pop up in cinema. Obviously somebody was a little too inspired, but who was it that did this? Was it a man, woman or maybe a teen. Kyle couldn't tell you, as he only saw the figure's white, featureless mask, with two beaming eyes beneath it's soulless face. Kyle was walking down a dark alleyway when it happened, his mysterious murder.

The next morning, beginning the first of November, Kyle's body was discovered, he had bled out on the ground, crawling back to civilization. Unfortunately he had not made it, as the pained expression was still evident upon his dead face and a gory trail of blood and guts was smeared across the black path behind him. Police came and set up a crime scene. This was clearly a brutal murder, a midnight stabbing unseen by anyone. There weren't any surveillance cameras watching the area where Kyle was killed, so no footage of the killer was ever found. However, it was when Detectives began asking around town, that people claimed to have seen a mysterious figure in a white mask, looking an awful look like some horror villain from some modern (at the time) scary movie. Although a lot of people dressed like their favourite monsters for Halloween, this stranger seemed far more menacing and too old to be trick or treating. Many of the townsfolk claimed the strange man knocked on their door, not asking for candy but pulling out a switch blade and chuckling creepily behind the mask. Nobody gave this stranger candy, instead they simply slammed the door in their face. Detectives put together an image of this masked killer. Witnesses said the figure wore a black cloak and hood over their head, with a porcelain mask covering their face. Most believed this figure was a man, but some claimed it was much smaller than that, either a woman or teenager. So the Detectives dug deeper and soon rumours spread of a real life slasher, straight out of a horror movie, began to circulate around the town. Newspapers had drawings of the masked killer and the more media that rotated, the harder it was to track down this murderer. Because whoever this killer was, they would have known everyone was onto them. So the search became difficult and days turned to weeks, then months without any clues pointing towards the killer. That was until the next Halloween of 1983, when the masked stranger would haunt the sleepy town of Millett yet again.

This time, everyone was aware of the killer, as the story of Kyle's murder had become legend around the townsfolk. Unfortunately there were a few idiots who decided to dress as the Millet Killer for Halloween, these fools were all arrested and unmasked. Perhaps one of these suspects was the real killer from 1982, but because so many had stupidly cosplayed as the murderer, it was impossible to make any convictions stick. One of them was mentally ill and claimed he was the killer, another was laughing it up, saying she was an agent of hell. Another was a cocky teenager who was more sarcastic than serious. The last three cried hysterically, screaming that they were just pretending to be the killer as a joke. The first three suspects could've been the killer, perhaps they were all in on it. Yet, considering the fact Kyle was the only witness to his murder and was dead, nobody on earth could truly say for certain who it really was that killed the boy back in 1982. So nobody was arrested or charged with Kyle's murder. However, nobody else was killed in 1983 or in the many years since. So perhaps the investigation prevented further murders, but the mystery of who it really was, or why they did it, still remains unsolved to this very day.
