"No. I am finally dining with the rich and mighty, so I don't want you to spoil my endeavours," Evan shook his head vigorously, and his glasses bounced off his face and fell on the bed.
I picked up his glasses and gave them to him, although I had a silent urge to crush the huge glasses into smaller pieces. "Evan, Sean is a prodigy and has won several awards and ceremonies. Please, I need a tutor in maths, and If you connect me with Sean, I will reward you with freebies from my workplace for the whole semester,"
Evan let out a mirthless laugh and adjusted his glasses that rested lopsidedly on the bridge of his nose, "I eat all I want at Sean's place, Keziah. There is nothing you have to offer me,"
Amani hissed loudly, "Really, you can't help your cousin? When did you turn so cruel,"
Evan shrugged his shoulders, and I wished I could punch the smirk off his face, "it's called looking out for yourself,"
Amani gave me a side glass and shifted awkwardly towards Evan, "Okay, Evan. Thank you for not helping. Before we go, please, can we get water?"
Evan batted his eyelids at Amani. "Why? Didn't you drink water at home?"
"Common Evan! The list you can do is have mercy on your dear cousin and her best friend," Amani clenched her throat with both hands, mimicking a gagging expression.
"Okay. Whatever," Evan said and headed into the kitchen. Amani quickly headed to the kitchen and locked the door before Evan could escape.
"Amani! Are you mad? Open this door right now," Evan pounded on the door.
"Sorry, Cuz. I want to give you enough time to conjure a lie for Sean. He will not be happy when he finds two strangers at his party… unless you tell him we are your guests," Amani sticks her tongue out even though Evan cannot see her.
I quickly grabbed Evan's phone and tossed it to Amani. She input Evan's password and scanned the party invitation tickets onto my phone.
"Amani, how do you know Evan's password?" I whispered as Evan pounded on the door heavily.
"I have my ways, Kez," Amani smirked and started skipping to the kitchen where we had locked Evan. He scowled at us as he opened the door. Evan was scrawny and couldn't stand a chance against us if he tried it. He was not the kind of guy who would typically hang around Sean.
"Amani! Let's never speak to each other again. How dare you humiliate me?"
I stopped myself from rolling my eyes. Evan had repeated the 'don't speak to me again speech' for as long as I had known Amani and him.
"Evan, I am sorry, cuz, but you pretended not to know me,"
"Oh yeah?" Evan lifted Amani and smacked her down before she finished speaking. I widened my gaze at the scene before me. Amani had always defeated Evan in their fights, but he threw her to the floor like she was a soft pillow.
Evan dusted his shoulders and twisted Amani's ears. "Amani, do you have a death wish? Give me the invite now,"
"Never Evan. Keziah needs to meet Sean so she can ask him to tutor her. Plus, Sean is your rich friend, and he won't mind the extras at his party," Amani rubs her palms together while pouting at Evan.
"I have been working hard to join Sean's crew, and you girls will not ruin my swag. So, I better not see you at the party, or-" Evan focused his attention on me and glared at me, his eyes bulging as if they would pop out any time
"Or what, Evan? What will you do? " I asked, even though I felt shame cover my body like a second skin. I needed to remind Evan to keep his mouth shut before he ran off to Sean. Evan was still that scrawny boy who couldn't say or do anything when people doubled down on him. I sensed that feeling of inferiority, and I decided to pounce on it. Amani nodded her head vigorously in agreement with my words.
I inched closer to Evan and stared down at him, "It's not like we are asking you for something big. Besides, we already have the invite and will mind our business at the party. Don't forget your family and allow us to have some fun,"
Evan chuckled loudly and wrinkled his nose in disgust, "Ah! It seems like the broke princess has forgotten that she no longer calls the shots here. Haven't you learned anything from the consequences of your past actions? You can just hire a paid tutor to teach you mathematics, and maybe your dumb skull can accommodate something. Instead, you are going after a rich guy like Sean to teach you maths"
I hissed loudly, "Really? Is that your best shot? Fine, I admit my past mistakes, and I have returned to pick up my crumbs, but you seem to forget that you came from the same shit I emanated from. So before you raise your shoulders at me, remember to look at yourself in the mirror and groan at your pitiful reflection,"
I advanced closer to him and whispered into his ears, "You…look…like…crazy…shit,"
Amani stepped in between Evans and me, "Guys, this is childish and is going too far. Evan, we already have the invite and will take our leave. Thank you for your help"
Evan slapped Amani's hands away and pushed me against the wall, "You guys just think you can talk to me anyhow and leave? You are just like the rest of those spoiled brats"
Amani tried to step in and separate us, using her hands to force us apart, but I charged towards Evan.
"Evan! Instead of running your mouth on two young girls, why don't you go and fight the spoiled brats to increase your popularity?"
Evan raised his hands to slap me but stopped when he heard Amani screaming at him, "Just like in the past, you are still the same…Keziah"
I bit my lips to stop the tears from falling. "Evan, I am sorry-"
Evan hissed loudly and rolled his eyes at me, "Why? It's just two people with low self-esteem fighting against each other. You've won this round today, but the next one will not be easy. Congratulations Keziah! You are in my black book now"
Amani placed her hands on her hips and huffed with her chest rising and falling rapidly with each word she uttered, "Oh, please! You two should grow up and bury the hatchet. Keziah has apologized for her past actions, and she has changed. Why do you keep making references to the past?
Amani turned to face me and shook my shoulders. "Keziah, you were also rude to him and tried to bully him. You were wrong, my friend. So, apologize to each other and let's enjoy our party tonight,"
I turned to Evan and bowed my head, "I am sorry, Evan"
Evan snorted loudly and pointed in the direction of the door, "You guys should just leave me alone"
Amani rolled her eyes and grabbed my hands as we approached the door. We walked in silence to my hostel.
"I shouldn't have spoken to Evan like that. Amani, I am sorry"
Amani shook her head and adjusted the weight of her bag, "You know Evan and his behaviour. I wish Sean and his friends knew his true personality that he always manages to hide,"
Amani pumped her fist in the air and yodelled, ignoring the stares she had attracted with her actions, "On a positive note, we have a party to attend. Oh my gosh! I am so excited and cannot wait to grace my presence at Sean's party,"
I nodded even though my stomach felt queasy. Did I need to ask the most popular boy in school for help with my homework? I could just hire a tutor to teach me mathematics, but I don't have any money to my name. Besides, I could barely afford the rent for next month.
Amani tapped my shoulder, and a frown etched on her face, "What are you thinking about Kez?'
I shook my shoulders and forced a smile, "Nothing, Mani. I can't wait for the party to get started"
