Chapter 2: Speak Easy

Virginia had fallen through a trapdoor in Harry's secret study, but she might just as well have gone down the rabbit hole. What we found turned out to be a key to solving Clare and Harry's murder...

June: Virginia? Are you all right?

Virginia: I'm fine, but I think you should take a look down here.

June: What is this place? My God, there must be hundreds of barrels.

Clue #1

June: "Liberty Whiskey." What was Harry doing with all this whiskey? Did you know anything about this, Virginia?

Virginia: No, never. I knew my parents enjoyed a drink from time to time.

June: Who doesn't? But this is more than the occasional drink. Looks like Harry had a little business on the side. This amount of whiskey...

Virginia: What do you mean?

June: Whiskey smuggling has been big business ever since Prohibition started.

Virginia: You're saying my father was a bootlegger?

June: Let's just see what else we can find.

Clue #2

June: Harry's appointment book. He had a meeting the day he died. With a man named Eddie. Virginia, do you know who this man is?

Virginia: No, but my father took his boat out that day. He said he had a meeting with a client.

June: Okay. Virginia, I need you to stay with Mrs. Talbot for a while. You've already helped so much, but I can't risk you getting hurt.

Boats like this were practically mandatory for the New York wealthy. Luxury comfort with access to the freedom and privacy of international waters. As I took a moment to look out at the harbor, I got the feeling I wasn't alone.

Clue #3

June: Hello? Who's there? What are you doing here?

Sam: Detective Sam Watts, FBI. And you are?

June: I'm June Parker, Clare van Buren's sister. What's an FBI agent doing on my brother-in-law's boat?

Sam: The FBI is conducting its own investigation into the deaths of Clare and Harry van Buren. We believe it has something to do with Harry's business dealings.

June: If the FBI is investigating, why don't the police know?

Sam: Prohibition is bureau business, ma'am.

June: So you think Clare and Harry were killed because of Harry's bootlegging activities?

Sam: Harry had some very dangerous associates.

June: Dangerous? How so?

Sam: Take a look and see for yourself.

Clue #4

June: A gift box with a bullet inside. And there's a note. "A pleasure doing business. Eddie." What does that mean?

Sam: It's a warning against breaking a deal. This is how the mob do business.

June: So Harry was doing business with the mob. What do you know about this Eddie?

Sam: Let's go somewhere to talk. I'll tell you more.

June: I'd like to hear everything you know, Detective.

Sam: The FBI have been tracking Harry's illegal activities for six months now. Business was going south and Harry started to get cold feet.

The headline in today's paper caught my eye.

Clue #5

June: "City cracks down on mob violence."

I'd heard stories of mob violence from across the Atlantic. But up until now they were just that. Stories. As I listened to Sam talk, the cold reality began to sink in.

June: Thank you, Detective. You've been very forthcoming. Do you have any suspects? What about this Eddie guy?

Sam: I'm sorry, ma'am. I can't share any information on actual suspects. I hope you trust that the investigation is in good hands.

I had learned so much already. I needed to get a look at Sam's file before he left.

Clue #6

Eddie Daggett. I'd heard the name before. He was a known mob enforcer. A lead suspect in several unsolved murders. Was this the man who killed my sister and her husband? And there was another lead in Sam's file. The Blind Tiger--a speakeasy. I decided to look into it myself.

Sam: Miss Parker, I guess I shouldn't be surprised to see you here.

June: I've never been good at minding my own business.

Sam: Maybe I wasn't clear, but you need to leave this to the professionals.

June: Not a chance. Let's find The Blind Tiger, shall we?

Clue #7

June: This looks like our place.

Sam: Fine. Let's go inside. But I'll do the talking.

Bartender: Good afternoon, folks. Can I see your membership card?

June: Oh, yes. Hang on a moment.

Sam: Miss Parker, what are you doing? You don't have a membership card.

June: People come stumbling out of here drunk all the time. You never know what you'll find.

Clue #8

June: See? What did I tell you? "The Blind Tiger Private Club - Member."

Sam: Well, that was just lucky.

June: Better lucky than good. Now let's go. All this talk of Prohibition is making me thirsty.

Sam: You've done your bit. Now, let me ask the questions. Barkeep, I'm looking for a lowlife named Eddie Daggett. Seen him?

Bartender: Oh, yeah? Who wants to know?

June: You'll have to excuse my boyfriend, sir. He gets a little hotheaded. Sam, honey, why don't you go ahead and get us a table? Bartender, a gin martini please.

Clue #9

Bartender: Here you go--on the house. Looks like you picked a real gem there, lady.

June: Tell me about it. Eddie owns him a favor. I won't get any peace till he's found him.

Bartender: You just missed him. He was here half an hour ago at his usual spot at the end of the bar.

June: Thank you, you've been very helpful. And you make a damn good cocktail. Sam, Eddie was here. We just missed him.

Sam: What were you thinking? This isn't a gam. This is a federal investigation.

June: Sounds like sour grapes to me. Let's find out what Eddie was up to before he left.

Clue #10

June: Looks like Eddie wrote something down. But what do these numbers mean?

Sam: They look like betting odds. Horse races, maybe?

June: Seems you have a few vices of your own, Mr. Watts.

Sam: There's a race on this afternoon. Eddie could be on his way to the track.

June: Let's go. If we hurry we might catch him.
