Job Searching Shenanigans...
with a sprinkle of dangerous situations
You see this job searching ehn, God will help us.
It's always one thing or the other when it comes to employment in this Tinubu economy. Is it the ridiculous job descriptions? Or the even more ridiculous pay? The unnecessary and somewhat unprofessional interviewing process? You go chop eba chop eba chop ebaaa sotey, fake employers go dey invite you come interview because you sef don try.
You see that fake interview? Yes?
That's the one I want to talk about.
After I got back from camp in March, I got an invite for an interview at some company in Ogba. π©
I was happy and I began to do my research, by checking them out on Linkedin, Nairaland, Twitter and their website. Here's what I found:
No employees on LinkedIn,
Vague and repetitive descriptions on Nairaland and,
Their website was not secure.
At this point, the reasonable thing to do was just to abandon mission and move on, right?
No. π©
Instead, I decided to dress up and go for the interview. π©π©
When I got to the estate, I asked the security guard for directions and also gave the company name. He told me that there's no such company and the only organization there is a driving school. π©
He asked if I was sure as he had never heard of such a company in all his years of working in the estate, I told him yes and even showed him the email I received. He relented but told me to be careful then proceeded to give me directions.
I arrived at the venue earlier than scheduled, chatted with the receptionist, signed my name, and then took a seat to wait.
And boy, did I wait... and wait... and wait some more! π©
After waiting for an hour, I was convinced it was one of those "tests" where they'll make you wait for hours because they want to examine your patience level then they'll eventually offer you the job.
Two hours passed, but nothing yet. At this point, I was beginning to get frustrated because wetin sef?
I managed to get a hold of the man at the front desk to complain, he apologized and then told me that the interviewer was on his way. Sure enough, the interviewer along with some other unfamiliar men arrived, and their menacing faces made the alarm bells in my head go crazy.
I got a very bad feeling that something was going to happen to me if I didn't get the hell out immediately. Omo, my dear readers, na so I run o.
I packed my bags and speed-walked the hell out of there and I did not look back nor feel safe until I got to the security post. When I got there, I started to narrate everything to the security man and he was like, "Ehen! sheybi I talk say company no dey there, na so dem for kidnap you."
He gave me more advice and told me to be more careful, I said thank you and went home.
End of story. Lessons?
DO YOUR RESEARCH O! If something doesn't add up, ask questions. ASK QUESTIONS!
Trust your instincts too, If your mind doesn't sit well with it then it's not for you.
Don't be so desperate for a job that you now abandon all your common sense like I did. It might lead you to unfortunate situations. The right opportunity will find you so don't stress it.
Don't rush. Accomplish at your pace. Speed doesn't matter when you decide to relentlessly keep advancing towards your dream which ignites your being. β Hiral Nagda
Incase you were wondering, I got a job a week later.
Until next time! β€
