How did Zhang Shijie and Chen Yizhong get to Fuzhou? It turns out that after Lin'an was occupied by Yuan soldiers and the young emperor Zhao Xian was captured and sent to Dadu, Zhao Xian's two older brothers, nine-year-old Zhao (xià) and six-year-old Zhao Bing (bǐng), escorted by Southern Song royal family and minister Lu Xiufu, fled to Fuzhou. Lu Xiufu sent people to find Zhang Shijie and Chen Yizhong and invited them to Fuzhou. Once the three ministers discussed the matter, they decided to embrace Zhao (趙) to take the throne and continue to raise the banner of the Song Dynasty and rebel against Yuan Dynasty.

When Wen Tianxiang got the news, he felt the hope of recovery and immediately rushed to Fuzhou as well to serve as a Privy Counsellor in the new court. He suggested to Chen Yizhong that he should attack the Yuan army by sea and recover the two Zhejiang regions. But Chen Yizhong thought it was too risky and disagreed with Wen Tianxiang's suggestion.

Wen Tianxiang had to change his mind and went to Nanjianzhou (now Nanping, Fujian) to establish a capital and recruit men to prepare for the counterattack. The next year, Wen Tianxiang marched into Jiangxi, and with the cooperation of rebel forces from all over the country, defeated the Yuan army continuously and recovered many counties such as Huichang.

By this time, another Yuan army had moved south to attack Fuzhou. The Song army was defeated and Chen Yizhong, seeing that there was no hope for recovery, fled alone by boat overseas. Zhang Shijie and Lu Xiufu and other protection Zhao Qing escaped to the sea ship, moving to Guangdong. Unfortunately, the sea blew into a hurricane, and almost capsized the ship, the young Zhao Chen was frightened and died of disease.

Zhang Shijie and Lu Xiufu took Zhao Bing to the throne and moved the navy to Mount Yongnyong (in present-day Xinhui South, Guangdong.)

Zhang Hongfan, a great general of the Yuan dynasty, reported to Yuan Shijo that if he didn't extinguish the small dynasty in the south quickly, he was afraid that more Song people would respond. Then Yuan Shi Zu sent Zhang Hong Fan as marshal and Li Heng as vice marshal, leading 20,000 troops to the south by water and land.

Zhang Hongfan first sent troops to attack Wen Tianxiang who was stationed in Chaozhou. Wen Tianxiang was forced to move to a deserted mountain range in Haifeng because of his small army. The Yuan army suddenly arrived and Wen Tianxiang was captured.

The Yuan soldiers sent Wen Tianxiang to Zhang Hongfan's camp, and Zhang Hongfan untied Wen Tianxiang and left him in the camp.

When the Yuan army arrived at the mountain, Zhang Hongfan sent someone to persuade Zhang Shijie to surrender. Zhang Shijie said, "I know that if I surrender to Yuan Dynasty, I will not only live but also get rich. However, I would rather lose my brain than surrender."Zhang Hongfan knew that Zhang Shijie usually admired Wen Tianxiang and asked him to write a letter to Zhang Shijie to recruit him to surrender. Wen Tianxiang sneered and said, "If I can't save my parents myself, will I advise others to betray them?"

Zhang Hongfan asked someone to bring ink and a pencil and forced him to write a letter. Wen Tianxiang took the pen and wrote down two lines of poetry without hesitation.

"Since the beginning of time, no one has died.

(meaning: since ancient times, people inevitably die, I want to leave a sincere and loyal heart to shine for thousands of years. (The original poem has eight stanzas, written by Wen Tianxiang when he crossed the zero ding ocean.)

The soldier brought the verses he wrote to Zhang Hongfan, who could only laugh bitterly when he read them. When he saw that it was hopeless to persuade him to surrender, he had no choice but to attack.

The mountain is located in the south of our country, and it is a dangerous place with the back of the mountain and the sea. Jang Seok-Jae lined up more than 1,000 ships in the sea, connected them with ropes, and built a castle around them, determined to fight with the Yuan soldiers. The Yuan army used small boats filled with thatch, poured enough oil, lit a fire, riding on the wind to launch a fire attack on the Song army. Zhang Shijie had anticipated this, coated the boat with a thick layer of wet mud, and tied a long log to hold the Yuan's fire boat.

Zhang Hongfan's fire attack failed, so he blocked the seaport with a fleet of ships, cutting off Zhang Shijie's traffic to land. Song soldiers at sea are hungry to eat dry food, thirsty to drink seawater is salty and bitter, and the soldiers have vomited after drinking. Zhang Hongfan launched a fierce attack by Yuan soldiers, Song soldiers resisted to the death, and the two sides held each other.
