"Is my Uncle alive?"
page 16 of The Fig Tree Series

We were waiting and waiting with the one officer who's radio was on with various police sounds and reports. Though we saw the three officers go down the street, we had no idea what was going on at Georgio's house.
The three officers with the boat proceded just as Officer Preston had when he picked up the children. Officer Preston had explained the details of the house and the situation. The other two officers had guns ready just in case there was a threat or danger behind the door.
They entered the house and carefully made their way through the dark hall up to Georgio's bedroom door.
"Hello! This is Officer Banthrop. Hello! We are with the flood rescue team. Can you hear us? Is anyone in there? Your family is safe and very worried about you. Georgio? Can you hear me?"
Still not a sound or a word. The three officers looked at each other in agreement. Then Officer Banthrop kicked the door so hard it busted open. The other armed officer held his gun steady, but there was no threat. Inside the bedroom the officers quickly spotted Uncle Georgio on the floor. Officer Preston rushed to him to check his breathing and vitals. Georgio was still alive, but unconscious on the floor.
"He's alive!" Officer Preston told the others. The three of them carried his body to the boat, then called the EMS ambulance.
"We've got him," a voice over the radio spoke.
Mario smiled.
The three officers returned through the flooded street to dry land just as the sirens of the ambulance were heard rushing towards them.
We all could see Uncle Georgio's body in the boat and he was not moving. Fig started crying quietly and Anya and I stayed close to her. Mario ran to the boat.
"He's alive right? He's not dead, right?" Mario asked a bit panicky.
"He's alive, kid, but you've got to get out of the way," the officer commanded. Mario moved away heading back towards us. Then the officer looked at all of us as the ambulance was making it's way towards the boat.
"He's in a comatose state. Unconscious. We're bringing him to the ER."
They lifted Georgio's body unto the ambulance bed and then set the bed inside the ambulance. Soon the ambulance was rushing off to the hospital.
Fig walked up to Officer Preston.
"Thank you Officer," she said, then added, "What hospital are they bringing my Uncle to?"
"Tampa General, most likely," he replied.
"You don't know for sure?" Fig said getting nervous.
"I'm sorry Ma'am, the storms have caused a lot of problems even for the hospitals," he said then asked another officer in uniform for a card.
"Here is Officer Banthrop's number. If you need further information, give him a call. Now it would be best to get somewhere safe if you can, alright?"
Fig took the card. Then she grabbed Mario's and Anya's hands and nodded at me like it was time to go.

Another fantastic piece to the story, Shanon! You're doing an amazing job at putting the different difficulties around Hurricanes into vivid perspective.
This passage masterfully conveys a tense rescue scene, blending vivid descriptions and urgent dialogue to create a palpable sense of anxiety and emotional depth surrounding Uncle Georgio's fate.
