A Mother's Love: The Story of Ellie and Scooter

By PrazoPublished about a year ago 5 min read

Pandora was a harsh, unforgiving place, a world where survival often meant hardening your heart to the relentless cruelty around you. But even in the most desolate corners of the wasteland, love could bloom—love so fierce it could defy the planet’s madness. This is the story of Ellie, Scooter, and the love that bound them together even when the world tried to tear them apart.

Ellie had always been tough. She had to be, growing up on Pandora. As the daughter of Mad Moxxi, she inherited her mother’s strength and resilience, but unlike Moxxi, who thrived in the chaos, Ellie chose a different path. She built her life far from the neon-lit bars and deadly arenas, setting up a scrapyard in The Dust. Here, she could focus on what she loved most: machines, cars, and the thrill of the open road.

Yet, even in the relative safety of her scrapyard, Ellie couldn’t escape Pandora’s dangers. Raiders, bandits, and creatures of all kinds constantly threatened her, and though she could handle herself in a fight, it was Scooter, her younger brother, who brought a semblance of normalcy to her life. Scooter was a genius with engines, a mechanic who could make any vehicle roar back to life, and he shared Ellie’s passion for cars. Together, they were unstoppable, two siblings bonded by grease, gears, and a love for the thrill of speed.

But their bond went deeper than just a shared love for machines. Ellie had practically raised Scooter after their family splintered. Moxxi, their mother, was always busy with her own pursuits, and their father… well, that was a topic Ellie rarely discussed. So, Ellie took it upon herself to be the rock in Scooter’s life, the one person who would always be there for him, no matter what.

One day, word reached Ellie that Handsome Jack, the self-proclaimed dictator of Pandora, was tightening his grip on the planet. He was hunting down anyone who posed a threat to his rule, and the vault hunters—those brave souls who dared to oppose him—were top targets. Ellie wasn’t a vault hunter, but she knew the danger Jack represented. And she knew that if Jack ever set his sights on her or Scooter, he wouldn’t stop until he’d destroyed them.

The thought of losing Scooter terrified Ellie. She could handle herself, sure, but Scooter? He was all she had. He was her family, her little brother, the one she’d protected from the world’s worst since they were kids. Ellie would die before she let anything happen to him.

So when Scooter came to her one evening, his face alight with excitement, babbling about some new project that required him to leave The Dust and head to Sanctuary, Ellie’s heart sank. Sanctuary was the last safe haven on Pandora, but it was also a beacon for Jack’s wrath. The vault hunters were there, and where they went, trouble followed.

“Ellie, you should see the plans I’ve got!” Scooter said, his eyes wide with enthusiasm. “I’m gonna build the fastest, toughest vehicle Pandora’s ever seen! It’s gonna help the vault hunters take down Jack, I swear it!”

Ellie forced a smile, trying to match Scooter’s excitement, but inside, her heart twisted with fear. She wanted to tell him no, to keep him close, safe in the scrapyard where she could watch over him. But she knew Scooter. Telling him no would only make him more determined.

“Just… be careful, okay?” she said finally, her voice thick with worry. “This ain’t no game, Scooter. Jack’s dangerous, and he don’t care who he hurts to get what he wants.”

Scooter grinned, oblivious to Ellie’s concern. “Don’t worry, sis! I’ll be fine. I’ve got this!” He hugged her tightly, then ran off to prepare for his journey, leaving Ellie standing alone in the fading light.

As the days turned into weeks, Ellie tried to focus on her work, burying herself in the familiar routine of fixing up vehicles and managing the scrapyard. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t shake the gnawing fear that something would happen to Scooter. Every time a customer pulled up to the yard with news from Sanctuary, Ellie’s heart would skip a beat, dreading the possibility of hearing that something had happened to her brother.

Then, one day, the news came.

A vault hunter, battered and bruised from battle, arrived at Ellie’s scrapyard. They told her about a mission gone wrong, about how Scooter had stayed behind to ensure their escape. How, in his last moments, Scooter had launched himself into the stars, giving his life to save Sanctuary from certain destruction. He had died a hero, they said. His last words were about the vehicle he’d built, the one that had saved countless lives.

Ellie felt the world collapse around her. Scooter, her little brother, her light in the darkness, was gone. The vault hunter tried to offer words of comfort, but Ellie barely heard them. Her mind was spinning, replaying memories of Scooter’s laugh, his grin, the way he’d light up whenever they worked on a car together. All of it, gone in an instant.

For days, Ellie couldn’t bring herself to leave the scrapyard. She wandered among the rusted cars and broken machinery, haunted by the silence that had replaced Scooter’s constant chatter. She wanted to scream, to cry, to tear the world apart in her grief. But instead, she kept working, her hands moving on autopilot, fixing vehicles that no longer brought her any joy.

But even in her grief, Ellie knew one thing: Scooter had died for something he believed in. He had given his life to save others, to fight against the tyranny of Handsome Jack. And if Scooter could do that, then Ellie couldn’t let his sacrifice be in vain.

Slowly, Ellie began to rebuild, not just the vehicles in her scrapyard, but herself. She started taking on more work, helping the vault hunters however she could, using her skills to create vehicles that would help them in their fight. Every car, every bike she fixed up was a tribute to Scooter, a way to keep his memory alive.

And though the pain never fully went away, Ellie found solace in the knowledge that her brother had died a hero. He had lived and died with a purpose, and in doing so, had left a legacy that would never be forgotten.

In the end, Pandora remained a harsh and unforgiving place, but Ellie knew that as long as she kept fighting, as long as she remembered the love she and Scooter shared, there was still hope. And that, more than anything, gave her the strength to keep going.
