Insomnia- A living Hell

Living With Insomnia

By Supti Published 2 years ago 3 min read

The dim glow of the bedside clock read 2:37 AM, and Emily stared at it, wide awake. Insomnia had become her nightly companion, a relentless shadow that refused to release her from its grasp. She shifted in her bed, trying to find a comfortable position, but her thoughts were too restless.

Emily's mind was a turbulent sea of anxieties and regrets, each wave crashing against the shore of her consciousness. The weight of her broken marriage bore down on her, memories of arguments, whispered accusations, and tearful goodbyes played like a tormenting film reel in her mind.

Tonight, it was her daughter's voice that haunted her. A few days ago, Sarah, her six-year-old, had asked, "Mommy, why doesn't Daddy come home anymore?" Emily's heart had shattered at the question. She tried to explain, but the words had eluded her, lost in a maelstrom of unspoken truths and resentments.

Emily's job, too, was a source of sleepless nights. The mounting pressure at work, the fear of failing, the constant struggle to prove herself as a single mother – it was all taking a toll. She yearned for a good night's sleep, but rest was elusive.

Tossing and turning, she glanced at the empty space on the other side of the bed, where her husband once slept. They used to share dreams, hopes, and whispered secrets under the covers. Now, it was an empty expanse, a void that mirrored her inner emptiness.

Emily's friends had offered advice: yoga, meditation, sleep aids, but nothing seemed to work. The more she tried to escape her insomnia, the tighter it gripped her.

As she lay in the darkness, Emily realized that her insomnia wasn't just a sleep disorder; it was a reflection of her fragmented life. Her broken marriage, the demands of her career, and her inability to cope with the whirlwind of emotions left her perpetually awake.

She knew she needed to confront her demons, to mend her shattered heart and regain control of her life. The path to recovery wouldn't be easy, but perhaps, someday, sleep would return to embrace her, not as a tormentor, but as a peaceful companion, lulling her into the serenity she so desperately craved. Until then, Emily would continue her restless journey through the long nights, facing her inner demons and searching for the elusive slumber that seemed just out of reach.

The days turned into weeks, and Emily's struggle with insomnia continued. She began to take the advice of her friends more seriously. Yoga classes became a part of her weekly routine, and meditation found its place in her daily life. Slowly but surely, she was learning to manage her anxieties.

At work, she had an honest conversation with her boss, explaining the pressure she was under as a single mother. Surprisingly, her boss was understanding and offered her more flexibility. It was a small but significant relief. Emily started to believe that perhaps she could make things work, even in the demanding world of her career.

Yet, the biggest step was when she decided to confront her broken marriage. She reached out to her husband, not in anger or blame, but in the hope of finding some closure and understanding. They met for coffee, and there, in a quiet corner of the café, they had an emotional conversation.

It was a painful process, filled with tears and the reopening of old wounds, but in the end, they realized that they both bore responsibility for the crumbling of their relationship. They decided that their daughter deserved to see her parents in a healthy, friendly, and supportive relationship, even if it wasn't a romantic one.

They agreed to co-parent and support each other as friends. It was far from the ideal they had once dreamed of, but it was a step towards mending their broken family.

As weeks turned into months, Emily found that the burden on her heart was gradually lifting. The sleepless nights became less frequent, and when they did happen, they were less intense. Her daughter, Sarah, noticed the change in her mother. "Mommy, you seem happier," she said one evening.

Emily smiled, feeling tears of relief welling up in her eyes. She realized that true healing wasn't just about regaining sleep; it was about finding inner peace, mending relationships, and rediscovering her own strength.

One quiet night, as Emily lay in her bed, she looked at the bedside clock, and for the first time in a long while, it read a reasonable hour. She closed her eyes, and as she drifted into sleep, she thought of the long and winding road she had traveled. The journey to recovery wasn't over, but she had taken a significant step forward, and for the first time in a while, her dreams felt like they could be peaceful and whole once more.
