“Did you know them?” The young girl asked the man, his facing seemingly melted off, features long and wrinkled before ending abruptly. His profile lit his angry features as he gazed into the flames.

“Not me, no,” he said as his eyes gleamed with the light of the fire, “but… I will offer my wife to you instead.”

The young girl smiled, her mouth full of slightly sharpened teeth and let out a light chuckle, “thank you,” she spoke quietly. As quickly as she spoke, she was gone, her footfalls knocking on the popcorn ceiling above him. All traces of his wife had gone: no photos, no belongings, just an already faded memory and a bed too large for only one man.

Every morning the man awoke and remained in his bed, he laid so long he began to sink into the mattress, losing himself in the silence. Through the window -- observing -- the young girl grinned, her teeth clasped together.
