The humming intensified as she pushed her way through the underbrush. The woods were out to drive her mad, and she couldn’t let them. Screwing her palms into her ears, she stumbled along through clawing briars. It was bright outside, but she was in darkness, stripped of meaningful sound, filled only with the drone of madness.

“Ms. Mason’s EEG is flat, Dr. Raymer. Brain-dead.”
“How unfortunate. Get the surgeon in. Pull and analyze that neurochip,” says the doctor. “And, as always, mums the word. We are too close to give up now.”
