Spaceship on the horizon

Chapter 1 - Horizon

Henry gazed high above him as the large spaceship continued to float into view. The horizon seemed to almost disappear once the full width of the vessel could be seen.

"It makes you feel pretty small, huh?" Alice Silva said, holding her gun high as she gazed with Henry. "The inside is even more incredible, believe it or not."

Keeping his eyes glued to the approaching ship, Henry scanned his large target for a small circular area.

"I don't hope to see the inside but if I can't find one of the solar generators, we won't be able to complete this mission. It should be…ah! Found it!"

Pulling a small telescope from the pocket in his vest, Henry gazed through the device to get a better view of the circular indention in the ship.

"There is the target. If I can get you to plant the energy interrupter, we can fry the engine and the whole thing comes down."

Alice raised an eyebrow and tilted her head curiously.

"Doesn't something that big have multiple engines? Backup generators? Energy boosters? Anything besides that one weak spot?"

Henry smiled.

"Ha! That would be true if this were a spaceship out of some classic alien flick. You forget, this spaceship is completely a sham. It might look big but it's made entirely of space junk floating around Earth. Did you forget what that crazy scientist did to get the planet into this mess?"

"Yeah, he took a bunch of junk everyone forgot about and made his own flying skyscraper. Talk about crazy real estate."

Henry nodded.

"Right, he was an ex-military scientist that went coo coo. After uploading his head into a supercomputer, he was able to construct that thing using and hacking old space equipment."

Chapter 2 - Aim

Alice laughed.

"He couldn't have just built something on Earth? I mean, what’s the point of him parading around the world with a giant outer space contraption. What is he even planning on doing…”

Suddenly, a loud burst should be heard sending shock waves through the skies. Henry and Alice stopped in their tracks and gazed in the direction of the approaching spaceship. A multitude of lights and flashes began emitting from the large spacecraft, almost seeming like a lighthouse, guiding voyagers home from the sea.

“Who the hell knows what he is thinking but from the sound of it, he is definitely planning on making a move soon,” Henry said as he began to flip through stacks of papers.

“This briefing doesn’t tell us his intentions, but the main purpose we are here is…”

“It’s to attach a bomb and stop that thing. I got that part down pat,” Alice said interrupting Henry. “Just tell me where I can aim this bazooka and I’ll blow his little project to kingdom come.”

Henry shook his head as he continued to study the briefing papers.

“We need to aim the explosive device at this small indention in the ship. When we hit that, it should all go up in flames. We shouldn’t even need to worry about any falling debris. That thing has so many moving parts, it is really explosive.”

Henry opened a digital screen to reveal a holographic image of the ship. Using his finger, he spun the image in mid-air, allowing his finger to slowly land on a spot underneath the ship.

“Here, Alice, this is your target. Aim the bazooka at this indention and we can call it a day. Right now, we have about 1 minute before it is in position.”

Alice shook her head with a smile.

“Well, he’s moving pretty fast isn’t he. Let’s get this show on the road,” Alice replied as she began loading a small circular device into her weapon. “Just give me the signal and I’ll let it rip, Henry!”

Chapter 3 - Indecision

“I got the small indention on the spaceship on the scope radar. How much longer do I have before firing?” Alice asked as she gazed through her viewer.

Henry nervously looked at a small device.

“We have 40 seconds before the spaceship is in position but ...the spaceship’s temperature is increasing. Like...it’s almost double what it was only ten seconds ago. 81C...and now almost 120C...is this thing going to blow up on its own?”

Alice raised an eyebrow and looked toward Henry.

“Should we be even firing this bazooka if it is going to blow up anyway. And another question, should we be getting the hell out of here?

Henry looked nervously at his radar again.

“Umm, actually, there is something else that is bothering me. We have 30 seconds left but something strange is happening. The ship is beginning to tilt downward. It’s losing altitude fast…”

Alice put down her bazooka and glared at Henry.

“So you are telling me this thing might crash? Well, hell! That’s confirmation enough for me. We need to get the hell out of here, Henry. That thing is going to crash, blow up, vaporize, whatever all on its own.”

Running around the camp site, Alice began to collect all the weapons and gadgets needed for the mission. Henry, still glued to his screen, only starred as he watched the estimated altitude of the spaceship decrease at lightning speed.

“We only have 15 seconds left, Alice. We might as well shoot the thing. We won’t survive a crash of that proportion…”

Alice sighed and grunted before jumping back into position. Grabbing her bazooka, she took aim at the small indention underneath the ship. Sweat began dripping from her forehead as the telescopic radar beeped.

“Target acquired, Henry. Get ready!”

Henry nodded quickly.

“Fire in 10 seconds...8…”

Chapter 4 - Frisbee

“In 3...2….1...”

Alice fired the bazooka directly at her target on the spaceship. In one small moment, the air filled with the sound of the weapon firing off a shot that causes everything around it to quake. Faster than the sound of the firing, the small, circular object quickly attached itself to the spaceship.

“All right! Got it right on target, Henry!...Henry…” Alice’s voice began to trail off as she noticed the ship slowing in mid-air. In addition to the slowing speed of the ship, a strange yellow glow began to envelope the hovering ship.

“Henry...this isn’t suppose to happen...right?” Alice looked at Henry who began to shake as he gazed at the object in the sky.

“No...this isn’t suppose to happen and the device...should have gone off by now…”

The ground began to shake as both Henry and Alice held onto their equipment for stability. Like the crack of a whip, the hovering spaceship flashed a bright glow in the sky, blinding any observer from the ground. Both Henry and Alice could only flinch from the painful light.

In one final burst of light, the spaceship appeared to jettison in reverse, flinging itself back into the horizon in the blink of an eye.

Suddenly, there was silence.

Picking themselves up, Henry and Alice looked around them to survey the area. Taking a look at his radar, Henry exclaimed, “The ship is completely out of range. Where ever it went, it’s not our problem anymore, I think.”

Alice snickered in exhaustion.

"Well, now that this is all done, you know how I’d like to wind down. A Pina Colada and some spicy fries and I'll be in heaven."

Henry laughed and nodded.

"Well, that’s not exactly my cup of tea but I'll take you up on that."

As Henry walked away, he gazed at the sky one last time.

“This might be a problem,” he whispered to himself.
