CHAPTER 2: Macca

“That was close,“ she thought to herself as she crouched down with her back against the inside of the car door, knees tucked up by her chin.

They had nearly caught her. Just as she let her guard down a little, then all of a sudden they turned and looked up to the top of the scrap pile where she sat inside the two cars smashed together.

Macca had seen them before, the two that stood and talked afterwards. She thought she had heard the smaller one call the big guy Bracks. And that the bigger guy had called the small one Findlay. She wasn't sure but that’s the names she was giving them now.

Findlay was much smaller in hight, as well as in sheer physical size, than his partner Bracks. Bracks was not hugely tall in the grand scheme of things but he was definitely taller and more muscular than any of the boys Macca had seen in the races. He probably weighed double what some of the other boys weighed, and had more scars and tattoos than all the other racers she had seen put together.

The tattoos and scars were hard to see from her hiding place but she could see they were there under his t-shirt and shorts. You could see the top of the tattoos sneak out from under the shirt onto his neck and covering the entirety of his right arm. From the bottom of his shorts you could glimpse the bottom half of the tattoo on his left thigh too. The one, or maybe it was two, on his face, it was hard to tell from her vantage point, were horrible looking things and added to the intimidation that Bracks carried.

She had only ever seen them finish the races but figured she could find the scrap pile made of completely car doors. Almost all of the scrap piles around the city consisted of a random mix of items, very few were organized into one kind of junk.

She just had to make sure she didn't get to close to Bracks, and if she did she had to be ready for an attack from the sounds of things. She had spent most of her life fending for herself and felt pretty confident in her abilities to defend and protect herself. Even though Bracks would stand well over a head taller than her and weigh most likely double her own body weight she wasn’t too worried about the big guy.

Findlay gave her even less to worry about. He would be nearly the same size as her, maybe slightly heavier from a few more pounds of muscle but aside from that they would probably be very closely matched. For what she lacked in muscle she more than made for in athleticism and wits.

She slowly turned as to not make any noise. The car door behind her had been bent from the two cars smashing together which left a slight gap for her to look through. Peaking through the gap between the door and the rest of the car, she seen the two boys had left. She slowly stood up while quickly scanning the area to make sure no one else was around and no one had seen her in her hideout. Then she walked over to the other side of the car and went down the short tunnel.

She would stay here for the night. It was already dark out and she didn’t feel like making the walk to her hut, the car seat was nearly as comfortable as her makeshift bed was at the hut anyway.

She laid down on the car seat. Staring at the roof, she smiled.

“Those boys are going to be pretty surprised when I beat them all.

She rolled over and pulled the blanket from the back of the seat down to cover herself and quickly fell asleep.
