An encounter at the edge of known space
The infinite darkness looming over Dana’s speck-sized salvage vessel did not want her there.
Her training covered ad-hoc repairs, distress protocols, even first contact. Everything a star sailor might possibly encounter in an uncharted region.
It did not account for this.
The darkness rumbled, and Dana hit full reverse on the thrusters. If it wanted her to leave, she’d leave.
When she reached the safety of familiar stars, she opened up her star chart to make a new entry at the edge of known space.
Out there in the vast nothing, the Darkness slumbered on.

Clauses, conjunctives, and conditions
Most writers I know have a love-hate relationship with commas, omitting them where they should be added and adding them where they should be omitted. As a line editor, the most common punctuation issues I see stem from incorrect comma use.
