Heartbreak Short Story # 1

A gust of wind blows across her face. The salty air gets into her nostrils. It’s cemented into her mind. She’s at the ocean. She had never been to the beach. It was supposed to be a romantic trip with him. It smelled salty for the most part. She sat on the sand, watching the sunset alone. Sipping her soda as she saw the sun go down. The sunset feels different without him there. She had never felt as lonely as she did now. She got up and wiped the sand off her white jeans. She didn’t fret about getting sand in them. If she was the person that she once was, the sand in her jeans would have been the biggest concern. But, she set those concerns aside. It didn’t matter to her whether the jeans she was wearing got sand in them or not. She had bigger problems to worry about. She walked the long coastline thinking about him. About his hair. His eyes. All the things she had loved about him, she was now growing to hate. A solitary tear rolled down her cheek. She wiped it off. She stared at the horizon without a vision in mind. She felt a shiver go up to her spine. She bundled herself more into her cardigan as if that would soothe the pain she felt within. He wanted to show her the world and he was supposed to take her to the beach but he never came. She missed him bitterly but she knew that he would never come back. She watched as others cuddled closely together. A bitter feeling of jealousy came up. She shrugged it off and trekked back to her hotel room. She made herself a cup of coffee and worked through the night, desperately trying to distract herself from her bitter reality. The phone rings. It’s him. She doesn’t answer. She blocks his number and continues her work. He desperately tries to reach her but to no avail. He paces from corner to corner trying to find out if she’s okay. He regrets leaving her but what’s done has been done. A feeling of anger creeps through his mind. He pushes it aside. He acknowledges what he did was wrong. The disappointment comes through. He throws his phone on the sofa and cries. He goes to the fridge to get himself a drink. He puts a few ice cubes and drinks as much as he can. He can’t stop thinking of her. Her hair. Her eyes. Her lips. Everything that he can remember of her never fades. He thinks about the good memories. She thinks about her itinerary for the next day. He falls asleep after a drink and a good cry. She stays awake to work on her presentation. He wakes up the next morning feeling drained. She’s already awake and on her morning walk. He drives to work feeling exhausted and regretting what he said to her the night before they broke up. She feels sad, but liberated as she gets herself an ice cream from the street vendor nearby. They shared a lot together but maybe it was better that they split. She thinks that and blinks the thought away. He ponders deeply as he drives to work. She laughs as she shares a drink with someone new. He cries as he watches his favorite movie. She finds herself thinking about the breakup. He goes out with his friends to have fun. She gets a call from him. Setting the phone aside, she continued talking with her friends, laughing about bygones and college shenanigans. He was laughing with his friends while they played board games. One day, they met each other. She smiles at him feebly. He laughs as she tells him about her adventures. He tells her that he has met someone new. Something breaks within her. She nods at his every word. She goes to get herself a drink. Tears streaming down her face, she thought she had truly moved on. Neither of them had truly moved on, but the fact of the matter was that they were trying.
