Heartbeat on Wheels (The Final Part)

Part 8: It's destiny!

By Maryam BatoolPublished 8 months ago 5 min read

“My mom used to call me Docto…”

Before he could complete the word Doctor, he passed a painful smile, tied the final knot of her gauze, and became silent.

“DOCTOR?” Hamza, is there something that’s bothering you?

Hamza sat down, his legs cross-folded.

“No, it’s nothing. Just my past that keeps strangling me every time.”

“Hamza, whatever it is, know that; it’s OK. Things happen. Sometimes, life feels upside down and fully distorted. There are moments when even letting out a single breath seems like a burden. There are times when you think it’s all your fault, for nothing. At those times, all you need is peace of heart. All you need is someone who lets you cry on their shoulder. But, even if no one finds you, you still have Allah–God! He never leaves your side… He helps you through the most difficult phases of your life.”

When Roshi was delivering this heartfelt speech to Hamza, he looked up straight in her eyes and got lost in the shine of her tears.

“Thank you, Roshi! It’s been a long time since I’ve ever seen someone comfort me.”

“I’m sorry, Hamza. I really got worried when I heard that this place is on fire. I don’t understand why— but for a moment, everything seemed unimportant to me and I just wanted to protect you. I’m sorry to cause you so much inconvenience.”

“Sorry for what, Roshi? Don't say that. You helped a stranger. You blindly gave me all that money. I don’t know how to pay you back.”

Roshi let out a small yet sweet chuckle, her cheeks lightly glowing with the tears, feeling down, her kajal–black eye pencil a little bit messed up, around the eyes.

During this conversation, they didn’t realize how lost they were in each other’s eyes. It was when a Policeman came near and said,

“Ma’am, is your HUSBAND okay now?”

Hamza’s eyes got a strange mischievous look, cheeks flushed, and when exchanged eyes with Roshi, he almost laughed.

“He’s not my HUSBAND, Sir…”

“Well! Then you better not treat him like one… Look, the way he’s sitting on the ground, like you’re a goddess.”

“I’m sorry, Sir! I was just treating her foot… We’re not a couple.”

“Okay… Okay… My bad. The way you were screaming "Hamza", I assumed he must be your husband.”

At this point, Roshi looked SO embarrassed, she couldn’t bear the heat and said,

“Sir, you must have a lot to cover up here. Don’t worry about me. Thank you for asking!”

“Oh yeah! Yeah… You’re right. Let me go back, there’s a lot to cover up here.”

As the officer was about to go, he turned his neck a little and pointed his finger at Hamza.

“You! What’s your name? Yeah, Hamza! You must take care of this girl. The way she looked for you, I saw a pain in her eyes that’s hard to find. Better not lose her.”

Hamza was so shocked to hear the words of the officer, he didn’t expect such a caring and emotional gesture from ROSHI.

Finally, when the officer turned his head back, his back facing their faces, he loudly said,

“And if you’re not married YET, I pray you do get married SOON.”

“What an eccentric man! He must be out of his mind. I… I … What he said ain’t the truth. I was worried, I admit that, but not as desperate as he made me look. I swear… I didn’t scream like he pictured me in front of you. And I….”

She was rushing words. She was trying way too hard to let Hamza know that she wasn’t a “Hopeless Romantic” girl, all of a sudden! When suddenly Hamza held her right hand and said,

“It’s OK. I won’t think the way you don’t want me to think… But, Roshi, don’t be embarrassed… I can’t, in words, tell you how I felt today. After almost 2 years of Pain and no one to share my tears with, I finally felt SOMEONE cared for me. You were a total stranger, but you held me together like no one. You healed me in words I can’t explain. I just don’t know how to thank you.”

The sound of Roshi’s heart beating faster than a racecar could be heard very distinctly, even in the bustling noise.

“Yeah…. I mean, no… I mean….”

Roshi was so lost and SHY in the moment that she didn’t know what words to choose and reply to him.

“Aren’t you hungry? I wanna eat something nice. Consider it a treat from me. And don’t give excuses. I’ll get all my money back from you once you‘re employed. DEAL?”

Hamza smiled and said, “DEAL”.

Both sat in a nice cozy little cafe and ordered food.

“So, Doctor Hamza… Where do you ACTUALLY intend to work?”

“Doctor Hamza? Haha… It’s a Hospital named ‘Ever Care Hospital’ for an ambulance service. And today was my Interview date. But it’s okay, sitting here with you feels better.

As soon as he mentioned the name of the hospital, Roshi choked on the tea she was slurping–the same hospital she was working in.

“What?”

“Why? You ok? It’s not a FANCY job… Why are you so surprised?”

No, it’s nothing… Wait a minute, let me just take this call.”

“Sure!”

.

.

“Yeah… Sure, Sir! Yeah, I’d arranged the INTERVIEW at a cafe. I’m right there. Yeah... And in fact, I've made a decision. I think I like this MAN, I mean CANDIDATE. I’m willing to offer him the AMBULANCE-SERVICE 2nd RANK.

Hamza’s eyes opened wide, his eyes clearly said, "This can't be".

“What? No WAYYY!”

Roshi laughed, a little sweeter this time.

“I guess it’s destiny! Mr. Hamza, you are now FORCED to work for my section at the hospital. Are you ready for the chaos?”

Hamza couldn't control showing his wide-smiled face this and exclaimed,

“Yes, Ma'am! Yes… I can handle every chaos as long as the TROUBLE-MAKER is ROSHI.”

Job well done Maryam. Love prevailed, and all is well with Hamza; I like that. This could be a Bollywood movie. Well done for getting through it through difficult times. It is a credit to you. 💗💗

  • I was soooo excited when I saw that there's a new chapter for this but a little sad to know it's the last one. Lol, husband 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I would have died of embarrassment if I was Roshi hahahahahhaahhha. I hope they both have fun working together. Also, it's always my pleasure reading your work!

First of all, congratulations to you for completing this series 😃👏 This part was wonderful, with a mix of humor and emotional weight! The part where Roshi comforts Hamza with soothing words was really nice, and the policeman scene was the funniest, such policemen are truly rare 🤣😃 It was expected that Hamza would get the job, and I wish both of them happiness. Roshi is a great character btw! 😃 I would give this series a solid 9.4 out of 10 rating, and thank you for the shoutout.
