Jenson texted Kody.

“I kind of miss the attention from Emily, even though it was short lived. I don’t know what I could have done differently, ya know?”

Kody braced herself and started texting back…

“There’s plenty of fish in the sea. I’m sure another girl will come along…”

“Yeah… but… you’re right I guess I just thought things would go differently.”

“Hang in there. Wanna come watch a movie? I have a movie called Cyrano that I haven’t seen yet. It’s a musical so maybe it’ll make you smile...”

“Sure. I’ll bring snacks!”

When Jenson got there he had a box of kettle popcorn and a bunch of ripe bananas.

Kody said hi and grabbed the snacks with a smile. Popping the popcorn in the microwave quickly, they put the movie in and started watching it.

There were some funny dancing scenes in the movie. The movie had some funny, witty dialogue. Kody was feeling slightly uncomfortable because the main character, Cyrano de Bergerac, was in love with Roxanne but his love was sadly unrequited.

Relatable. Kody gulped. It suddenly felt like a bit of banana and popcorn was hung in her throat. One small tear started to break forth from her blinking eyes.

“You okay?”

Jenson asked.

“Oh yeah. I’m good… just need to run to the bathroom real quick. I think I got some salt in my eyes from the popcorn somehow…”

“Okay. I’ll pause it.”

“Nah, that’s alright, keep it going, I’ll just be a minute…”

She went to the bathroom and sat on the toilet to collect her emotions.

“Why did I choose this movie to watch? Of all movies! Why didn’t we watch Finding Nemo or something lighter?”

She whispered to herself. Wiping her eyes with a tissue. She flushed the toilet to make it seemed like she’d actually used the bathroom other than just for an emotional regrouping session.

When she came back to the couch, the movie was almost near the end. The character Cyrano in the movie was finally opening up about how he’d been in love with Roxanne all along.

Jenson was very engaged with the movie. Dixie, Kody’s cat, had jumped up on the end table. She knocked over a stack of books. One of the books was Kody’s journal.

The journal opened to the recent entry that she’d written. Jenson’s eyes saw the words…

Kody took a dive for the journal to close it but it was too late, he’d seen the first part of the entry. Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment.

“I can’t believe that just happened! Dixie, I’m gonna lock you up!”

In shock, they both sat there in awkward silence.

An intense tsunami of emotions hit Jenson. A sequence of memories flashed through his mind of all his interactions with Kody. All the dots and stars finally aligned and connected in his brain.

Powerful images felt like they flew at the speed of light. Their kayak adventure. All the times they’d laughed and enjoyed time together. All the times they’d talked and just felt comfortable in one another’s presence.

He leaned back in for a second. The revelation was fully downloaded in his soul. Smiling, he looked at Kody who was still appearing to be horrified.

“I wanna crawl under a rock…”

She moaned with a pained expression.

Jenson grinned, gently grabbing her face with his sweet buttery popcorn hands, he kissed her. Then, he kissed her again…and again…
