Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Review

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Movie Review

By RICHARDPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

"The best moments in 'Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery' are the ones that won't be covered in this review (and hopefully won't be spoiled before you watch the film). However, these moments are abundant and scattered throughout Rian Johnson's uproarious, albeit slightly inferior, sequel.

Johnson's film maintains its zippy pace with clever details, amusing references, and sharp jabs at shallow celebrity culture. While the sequel expands the scope of the storytelling in every way—bigger, flashier, and twistier—it doesn't necessarily surpass the brilliance of the original 'Knives Out.' The film starts with captivating entertainment but loses some steam in the middle as the mystery doubles back on itself to reveal more about the characters we thought we knew. The result feels repetitive, and the tension in the first film is diluted against the sprawling and extravagant backdrop of a private Greek island.

It would be a challenge for Johnson to surpass his original film's smart and unique qualities, which seamlessly blended humor and genuine suspense. The characters in the first film felt more developed, and the ensemble cast had more opportunities to shine. In 'Glass Onion,' there are noteworthy and impactful performances, particularly from Janelle Monáe, Kate Hudson, and Daniel Craig, who once again delivers a delightful portrayal of the intrepid detective Benoit Blanc. The film also features enjoyable high-profile cameos. However, talented actors like Leslie Odom Jr. and Kathryn Hahn are underutilized in underdeveloped supporting roles.

Suppose you can catch 'Glass Onion' during its limited theatrical run before its streaming release on Netflix starting December 23. In that scenario, the film becomes even more enjoyable when watched with a lively and engaged audience. Plus, it allows you to avoid potential spoilers that may emerge over the next month. So, here's what you need to know!

Edward Norton portrays Miles Bron, a billionaire tech entrepreneur who isn't as brilliant as he believes. Once a year, he gathers his close-knit group of friends, self-proclaimed "Disruptors," for an extravagant weekend getaway. This time, he presents them with intricate puzzle boxes, a preview of the murder mystery he has planned for their secluded retreat. The mansion is flashy and minimalist, showcasing Miles' lack of personal style.

The guest list includes Kate Hudson as Birdie, a former model turned influencer who frequently finds herself in trouble due to racially insensitive tweets. Kathryn Hahn plays Claire, a married mother, and straightforward politician. Dave Bautista portrays Duke Cody, a bold men's rights YouTuber, and Madelyn Cline appears as his scantily clad girlfriend, Whiskey. Leslie Odom Jr. takes on the role of Lionel, a beleaguered scientist who receives urgent messages from Miles day and night. Additionally, the pleasant and stylish Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, receives an unexpected invitation and eagerly embraces the challenge, finding himself between cases. Craig's performance continues to be a joy to watch as he embraces a goofy demeanor.

The reunion takes a turn when Janelle Monáe's character, Andi Brand, arrives. Once Miles' partner in building his business empire, Andi is now estranged from the group. Her presence immediately sparks tension among the group and catches Blanc's attention. It sets up a promising premise.

However, as the title (taken from The Beatles' song) suggests, there are multiple layers to unravel, yet the truth at the core remains crystal clear. As a critique of how extreme wealth corrupts, the film's message is somewhat obvious, aligning it with recent satires like 'Triangle of Sadness' and 'The Menu' that aim at easy targets with wit and style.

Ultimately, the giant glass onion atop Miles' mansion becomes a fitting metaphor for the film as a whole—sparkling but hollow."
