Gazing Into Infinity

First chapter of a magical realism

Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. Most people couldn’t see it — no one was awake to witness the beauty — but Paisley could. She tucked herself away in her small bedroom, keeping the curtains drawn and the windows closed so no one would see the light from her candle flickering against the darkness.

One night she opened the window for a brief moment, a moment that changed her life. As she did, Paisley could see the colors of the night time sky vibrantly swirling and tenderly undulating, like cotton candy in a wind storm. She could see the purple clouds floating aimlessly, like confetti trailing through the night air. Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw it. She watches in amazement as glittering gold stars broke through and joined in the dance, darting among the purple clouds, and with them, the crystalline moonlight shined.

Paisley instantly felt mesmerized and drawn to this beauty. She couldn't tear her gaze away. And just like that, Paisley knew she had to be a part of this waltz — and that's when she began to dance. Every night thereafter, she would rise from her bed and float to the window, eager to join in the celestial ballet.

Storms and bad weather didn't stop her either, she thrived and relished in the howling winds and downpours of rain. It was like the elements were all conspiring together to make a beautiful piece of art in the sky. But the best nights were when the skies above were crystal clear and the stars were particularly bright — it was then that the golden stars would come out and truly make the stage their own.

She had been dancing for months when she began to realize something — while she could easily join in the movement of stars, she could not move with them. Every time she tried, her feet would come back down to earth and the starlight with all its beauty was out of reach, just like a dream fading away on the horizon. It left her with the most incredible longing, an entireching desire to feel the sky move beneath her feet and the stars reflecting in her eyes.

One night, just as she was about to give up her desperate pursuit, a wave of magic swept through the sky. Bright colors in greens and pinks illuminated the sky as if a cosmic orchestra was leading the grand finale of the night. Paisley felt something close to a levitating sensation and she found herself lifted off the ground. For the first time ever, Paisley’s feet left the ground — she was free to dance with the stars and the moonlight. She spun and twirled with the clouds, the night sky her only audience.

In that space, Paisley was no longer a girl hidden away in her bedroom, or a dancer wanting to join in the celestial ballet — she became a part of the night sky, twinkling and shimmering with lights. Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky and now, shielded away from the eyes of the world, they welcomed her in too.
