Forever in the Dreamtime

A forbidden love blossoms under the stars

By Tales by J.J.Published about a year ago 14 min read

The sun was setting over the vast expanse of the Australian outback, casting a warm orange glow over the dusty terrain. Aria stood at the edge of the community, gazing out at the seemingly endless landscape. She felt small and insignificant in the face of such vastness, yet at the same time, she felt a deep connection to this land and its people.

It was the 1950s, and Australia was a country in transition. The war had ended, and the nation was slowly rebuilding. But for Indigenous Australians like Aria, the war had brought little change. They were still marginalized, still oppressed, and still fighting for their rights.

Aria's community was a small, tight-knit group of people who lived on the outskirts of a rural town. They were a mix of traditional owners and descendants of the Stolen Generations, all brought together by circumstance and a shared history.

As Aria walked back through the community, she noticed the old men sitting in the shade, watching her with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion. They were the elders, the keepers of the stories and the traditions. They had lived through the hard times, and their faces bore the scars of a lifetime of struggle.

Aria nodded respectfully as she passed, feeling a sense of reverence for these men and their stories. She had grown up listening to their tales of the Dreamtime, of the ancestors and the land. She had learned about the importance of tradition and culture, and the need to preserve the old ways.

But as she walked, Aria couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. As Aria walked back to her family's home, she couldn't help but think about the condition that had plagued her since childhood. Vitiligo, a disease that caused white patches to appear on her skin, had been a constant companion since she was eight years old.

At first, it had been just a small patch on her hand, but over the years, it had spread to cover large areas of her body. The patches were unsightly, and Aria had grown up feeling self-conscious about her appearance.

She remembered the first time she had shown her patches to her friends at school. They had stared at her in horror, asking her if she had "catching leprosy." Aria had been devastated, feeling like she was somehow dirty or diseased.

As she grew older, the reactions only got worse. Kids would tease her, calling her names like "ghost girl" or "spotted dog." Aria had tried to ignore them, but it was hard. She felt like she was living in a constant state of shame.

Her parents had tried to be supportive, but even they didn't fully understand what she was going through. They would tell her to "just ignore it" or "it's not a big deal," but Aria knew that it was a big deal. It was a constant reminder that she was different, that she didn't fit in.

As she approached her family's home, Aria saw her mother standing outside, watching her with a concerned expression.

"Aria, how was your day?" her mother asked, as Aria approached.

Aria shrugged, feeling a sense of frustration. "It was fine," she said. "Just the usual."

Her mother nodded, but Aria could see the worry in her eyes. "You know, Aria, you're beautiful just the way you are," she said. "Don't let anyone ever make you feel like you're not."

Aria felt a surge of emotion at her mother's words. She knew that her mother was trying to be supportive, but it was hard to shake off the feelings of shame and self-doubt that had been ingrained in her since childhood.

She took a deep breath, trying to push aside her emotions. She knew that she had to be strong, for herself and for her family.

But as she looked down at her hands, she couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness. The patches on her skin seemed to mock her, reminding her of all the times she had been teased and ridiculed.

She felt like she was living in a constant state of trauma, reliving the painful memories of her childhood every time she looked in the mirror.

But she knew that she couldn't let her condition define her. She was more than her skin, more than her patches. She was a strong, capable woman, and she was determined to make a life for herself, no matter what.

One day as Aria walked through the bustling market, her eyes scanned the stalls for anything that caught her attention. She had always loved the market, with its vibrant colors and lively atmosphere. But today, she felt a sense of restlessness, a feeling that something was missing.

As she turned a corner, she saw him. He was standing behind a stall, his eyes fixed intently on a piece of artwork in front of him. Aria felt a jolt of electricity run through her body as their eyes met. For a moment, they just stared at each other, the world around them melting away.

Then, Aria's eyes were drawn to the artwork on the stall. It was a beautiful painting of the river that ran through the town. Aria reached out to touch it, but as she did, she accidentally knocked over a small vase that was sitting on the edge of the stall.

The vase shattered on the ground, and Aria felt a wave of panic wash over her. She was always so careful, and she couldn't believe that she had been so clumsy.

The man behind the stall rushed to her side, his eyes filled with concern. "Are you okay?" he asked, as he helped her pick up the pieces of the vase.

Aria felt a sense of mortification wash over her. "I'm so sorry," she said, as she handed him the pieces of the vase. "I'm always so careful."

The man smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "It's okay," he said. "Accidents happen. My name is Kael, by the way."

Aria felt a sense of relief wash over her. "I'm Aria," she said, as she smiled up at him.

As they stood there, Kael's eyes locked onto hers, and Aria felt a sense of connection that she couldn't explain. It was as if they had known each other for years, not just minutes.

Kael smiled again, and Aria felt her heart skip a beat. "Would you like to help me set up my stall?" he asked, as he gestured to the artwork on display.

Aria nodded, feeling a sense of excitement wash over her. As they worked together, Aria found herself feeling more and more at ease. Kael was easy to talk to, and he seemed to understand her in a way that no one else ever had.

As the morning wore on, Aria found herself losing track of time. She was having so much fun talking to Kael and helping him set up his stall.

As the sun began to climb higher in the sky, Kael turned to her and smiled. "Thanks for your help," he said. "I really appreciate it."

Aria smiled back, feeling a sense of happiness wash over her. "No problem," she said. "I had a great time."

Kael's eyes locked onto hers, and Aria felt a sense of connection that she couldn't explain. It was as if they had known each other for years, not just hours.

"I'd like to see you again," Kael said, as he smiled at her. "Would you like to meet me again tomorrow at the riverside behind the market?"

Aria's heart skipped a beat as she smiled up at him. "I'd like that," she said.

Kael's eyes locked onto hers, and Aria felt a sense of connection that she couldn't explain. "I'll meet you at the big tree in the center of the market," he said. "At 10 am?"

Aria nodded, feeling a sense of excitement wash over her. "I'll be there," she said.

As they said their goodbyes, Aria felt a sense of hope that she hadn't felt in years. Maybe, just maybe, she had found someone who could see beyond her condition, someone who could love her for who she truly was.

As the days went by, Aria and Kael's meetings became more frequent. They would meet at the market, and then sneak away to a quiet spot by the river. They would talk for hours, sharing their dreams, aspirations, and fears with each other.

One day, as they sat together on the riverbank, Kael turned to Aria and asked her about her condition. Aria felt a surge of anxiety, wondering how he would react.

"I've noticed that you have some white patches on your skin," Kael said, his voice gentle and concerned. "Is everything okay?"

Aria felt a lump form in her throat as she looked away, trying to hide her tears. "I have vitiligo," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's a skin condition that causes the loss of pigment."

Kael nodded, his eyes filled with understanding. "I know what that is," he said. "My uncle is a traditional medicine man, and he's treated people with vitiligo before. It's not contagious, Aria. You don't have to be ashamed of it."

Aria felt a wave of relief wash over her, followed by a sense of gratitude towards Kael. No one had ever acknowledged her condition like that before, or offered her such kindness and understanding.

As they continued to talk, Aria found herself opening up to Kael in ways she never had with anyone before. She told him about her dreams of becoming an artist, and her fears of being rejected by her Katsuni tribe.

Kael listened intently, his eyes filled with encouragement and support. He told her about his own dreams of becoming an artist, and his fears of not being good enough.

As the sun began to set, Kael walked Aria back to the edge of the market. They stood together, looking out at the crowd, and Kael turned to her with a mischievous grin.

"Want to meet me again tomorrow?" he asked, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

Aria nodded, feeling a thrill of excitement. "I'd love to," she said.

As they said their goodbyes, Kael leaned in and whispered in her ear. "Meet me by the old oak tree at sunset tomorrow. And come alone."

Aria's heart skipped a beat as she nodded, feeling a sense of anticipation and excitement.

The next day, Aria snuck away from her parents' stall, making her way to the old oak tree. Kael was already there, sitting on a blanket with a basket of food and a bottle of wine.

"I brought you some of my favorite berries," he said, as he handed her a small basket. "And some wine to celebrate our newfound friendship."

Aria's eyes widened in surprise as she took the basket and the wine. "You didn't have to do that," she said, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Kael.

Kael smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "I wanted to," he said. "I wanted to make this a special day for you."

As they sat together on the blanket, eating berries and drinking wine, Aria felt a sense of happiness and contentment that she had never felt before.

And as the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape, Kael turned to her and took her hand.

"I'm so glad I met you, Aria," he said, his voice low and husky.

Aria's heart skipped a beat as she looked up at him, feeling a sense of excitement and anticipation.

And then, without another word, Kael leaned in and kissed her.

It was a soft, gentle kiss, but it sent shivers down Aria's spine. She felt like she was melting into his arms, like she was becoming a part of him.

As they pulled away from each other, gasping for air, Aria smiled up at Kael, feeling a sense of joy and happiness that she had never felt before.

"I've been wanting to do that all day," Kael said, as he grinned at her.

Aria laughed, feeling a sense of playfulness and excitement. "I've been wanting you to do that all day," she said, as she smiled up at him.

As they sat together on the blanket, watching the stars come out, Aria knew that she had found someone special. Someone who saw beyond her condition, someone who loved her for who she truly was.

Kael and Aria's happiness was short-lived. A long-standing feud between their tribes, the Ahkani and the Katsuni, had been simmering beneath the surface. The tension finally boiled over, and a war broke out between the two tribes.

As the war between the Ahkani and Katsuni tribes raged on, Kael and Aria found themselves on opposite sides of the conflict. But despite the danger and tension, Kael couldn't stay away from Aria. He would sneak away from his tribe's camp at night, making his way to Aria's village to catch a glimpse of her. They would meet in secret, always looking over their shoulders, knowing that their love was forbidden.

One night, Kael snuck into Aria's village, his heart racing with excitement and fear. He made his way to Aria's hut, his eyes scanning the surroundings for any sign of danger.

As he reached the hut, he saw Aria standing outside, her eyes shining with tears. She ran to him, throwing her arms around his neck, and Kael lifted her off the ground, spinning her around in a circle.

"My love," he whispered, his lips brushing against her ear. "I've missed you so much."

Aria's hands tangled in his hair, pulling his head down for a kiss. Their lips met in a fierce, passionate kiss, the world around them melting away.

As they kissed, Kael's hands roamed over Aria's body, feeling the curves and contours of her skin. Aria's hands were just as bold, exploring the muscles of Kael's chest and arms.

Their kiss deepened, becoming more intense and passionate. They were lost in their own little world, a world of love and desire.

Finally, they broke apart, gasping for air. Aria's eyes were shining with tears, and Kael's face was flushed with passion.

Aria's fears and worries began to surface. She pulled away from Kael, her eyes pleading with him.

"Kael, please," she said, her voice trembling. "Don't come here again. It's not safe."

Kael's face softened, his eyes filling with love and adoration. "I have to see you, Aria," he said. "I need to hold you in my arms and feel your warmth."

Aria's eyes welled up with tears as she looked at Kael. She knew that she couldn't bear the thought of losing him.

"But what if something happens to you?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "What if you get caught or hurt?"

Kael's face hardened, his jaw clenched in determination. "I'll take that risk," he said. "I'd rather die than not see you again."

Aria's heart skipped a beat as she looked at Kael. She knew that she couldn't change his mind, but she also knew that she couldn't bear the thought of losing him.

"Please, Kael," she whispered, her eyes pleading with him. "Don't do this. I couldn't bear it if anything happened to you."

Kael's face softened, his eyes filling with love and adoration. "I'll be careful, my love," he said. "I promise."

Aria nodded, feeling a sense of resignation wash over her. She knew that she couldn't stop Kael from coming to see her, but she also knew that she couldn't bear the thought of losing him.

As they stood there, wrapped in each other's arms, Kael's scent filled Aria's senses. She breathed deeply, feeling his warmth and love envelop her.

"I love you," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

"I love you too," Kael replied, his voice low and husky. "Forever and always."

As they stood there, lost in their own little world, Aria knew that she would never let Kael go. She would fight for their love, no matter the cost.

As Kael prepared to leave, Aria clung to him, her eyes pleading with him to stay.

"Please, Kael, don't come back until the war is over," she whispered, her voice trembling with fear. "It's not safe."

Kael's face softened, his eyes filled with love and adoration. "I'll be careful, my love," he said. "I promise. I'll come back to you as soon as I can."

Aria's grip on his arm tightened. "No, Kael, please," she said. "Don't risk your life for me. I couldn't bear it if anything happened to you."

Kael's smile was gentle, but firm. "I'll be fine, Aria," he said. "I'll come back to you next week, when the moon is full. Until then, my love."

With one final kiss, Kael turned and disappeared into the night, leaving Aria feeling anxious and fearful.

Days passed, and Aria couldn't shake off the feeling of unease. She knew that Kael was planning to come back to her, and she was terrified of what might happen.

And then, one night, Aria's worst fears were confirmed. She heard a commotion outside her hut, and she rushed out to see Kael being dragged away by a group of village guards.

"Kael!" she screamed, running towards him. "No! Let him go!"

But it was too late. The guards had already spotted Kael, and they had deemed him a spy. With a swift and deadly blow, they struck him down, and Kael's lifeless body slumped to the ground.

Aria's world went dark as she rushed to Kael's side, cradling his head in her lap. She rocked back and forth, wailing in grief, as the village guards stood by, their faces impassive.

"Why?" Aria screamed, her eyes blazing with anger and sorrow. "Why did you have to kill him? He was innocent!"

But the guards just shrugged, their faces unyielding. "He was a spy," one of them said. "He was a threat to our village."

Aria's grief was like a tidal wave, crashing over her and sweeping her away. She couldn't bear the thought of living without Kael, and she knew that she would never be the same again.

As the sun rose over the village, Aria's body went limp, her heart broken into a million pieces. She knew that she would never find another love like Kael's, and she was consumed by a deep and abiding sorrow.

As Aria held Kael's lifeless body in her arms, her tears fell like rain, each drop shattering a piece of her heart. She felt like she was drowning in a sea of grief, unable to breathe or think.

Her mind was flooded with memories of their time together, of their dreams and plans for a future filled with happiness and love. She remembered the way Kael used to make her laugh, the way he used to hold her hand, the way he used to look at her with so much love in his eyes.

As she cried, Aria felt like she was losing herself, like her soul was being torn from her body. She felt like she was being pulled towards the spirit world, where she hoped to be reunited with Kael.

In the Aboriginal tradition, the spirit world is a place where the dead go to live on in the Dreamtime. It's a place of great beauty and wonder, where the spirits of the ancestors roam free.

As Aria's soul left her body, she felt herself being pulled towards the spirit world. She saw a great rainbow stretching out before her, its colors shining brightly in the sunlight.

She felt herself being lifted up, carried along the rainbow towards the spirit world. As she traveled, she saw all sorts of wonders: great serpents and eagles, giant kangaroos and wallabies.

Finally, she came to a great tree, its branches stretching up towards the sky. And there, sitting in the branches of the tree, was Kael.

He smiled at her, his eyes shining with love and welcome. Aria felt her heart fill with joy, and she reached out to him, embracing him warmly.

"We're together again," Kael said, his voice filled with happiness. "We'll never be apart again."

Aria smiled, feeling a sense of peace and contentment wash over her. She knew that she and Kael would be together forever, roaming the spirit world and living on in the Dreamtime.

And as they sat there, wrapped in each other's arms, Aria knew that she had finally found her true home. She was with the one she loved, and she would never be alone again.

What a great cultural story. Remember a long time there used to be movies of the week on television or even miniseries of books done for tv. This story could be a movie of the week.
