For Her
The smallest beginnings can spawn the greatest heroes.
Library permanently closed.
“That’s a shame, I was looking forward to the next book,” said Shanti.
Jeremy frowned as he stared at the sign.
*
Jeremy’s research revealed the library’s closure was due to a funds reallocation to something called the Warehouse Revival Project.
*
Edward Vinson, Project Director, smoked a fat cigar between equally fat fingers.
“I have my own suggestion for you Jeremy… Fuck off! Boys, show him the exit and give him the gift hamper, if you know what I mean…”
*
Jeremy scurried towards a window looking into the warehouse. Inside, workers shifted pallets holding white, plastic-wrapped bricks. Every pallet looked like it could have a street value of twenty million.
*
“Are you sure about this?” Mad Werich asked.
“Trust me, it’s the only way…” replied Jeremy. Mad Werich injected the glowing serum into Jeremy’s neck.
*
Jeremy wove through bullets and kicked a van, sending it skidding into the armed men. He darted to his left, grabbed the barrel of an assault rifle and bent it upwards, before tossing the bearer into a cloud of wasted cocaine. One warehouse down, a dozen more to go.
*
Rain poured down Edward Vinson’s face as he held a gun to the side of Shanti’s head.
“Please, let her go,” cried Jeremy.
“This is not a negotiation!” The gun went off. Jeremy collapsed to his knees.
“Shanti! NOOOOO!”
*
“Thirteen warehouses have succumbed to fires this morning where a surprising discovery was made; the Warehouse Revival Project was a front for a largest cocaine operation in Australian history. Project director, Edward Vinson, is missing and wanted by…”
*
Jeremy limped up to the counter and placed the book down carefully. The librarian gave him a quick smile and said,
“Oh, New Moon? Is it for you?”
