Folk Strange Stories Part 1: The Witch Ancestor of Miao Township Chapter 10 Section 4: Living Corpse
A large number of live corpses appeared in the water

Not everyone witnessed the scene just now. While the remaining lackeys on the same boat were looking around, ripples appeared on the water's surface around both boats. In a flash, more than a dozen dark figures leapt out of the water, lightning-fast, onto the two boats. Skinny and emaciated figures with fierce faces – damn it, weren't these reanimated corpses? Weren't there supposed to be only three reanimated corpses? Now, with the ones from the water included, there were more than thirty!
"Rat-tat-tat-tat," gunshots resounded, and reanimated corpses leapt onto the boats from all sides. The sporadic attacks were almost ineffective. In just a few seconds, only Old Wang and Liu Jingsheng remained on the neighboring boat; the lackeys on the same boat had been bitten to death by the reanimated corpses and dragged into the water, along with Zhang Yunwei and Li Jiadong.
"Jump over here!" I shouted at the two of them. At the same time, the white-haired man's short sword plunged into a reanimated corpse's belly; he smoothly sliced downward, and the reanimated corpse dropped onto the boat like a piece of dried meat. In the blink of an eye, the reanimated corpse became a lifeless body. Before he could withdraw his sword, the white-haired man jumped onto four or five reanimated corpses at once, kicked one into the water, creating an opening, and was knocked into the water by the remaining four reanimated corpses.
With the white-haired man no longer guarding us, we were on our own. The only people on this boat who could still move were Li Yan, Song Erlengzi, the chubby guy, and me. Fortunately, there were still two reanimated corpses on this boat. Drawing from my experience in the dark room, I aimed at one reanimated corpse's forehead and fired. After a burst of gunfire, the reanimated corpse nearest to me was shot in the head. I took a step back, avoiding the splatter of brain matter.
One more! I adjusted my aim to fire again, but the gun clicked instead of firing. Damn it, out of bullets. Although the sparks from Song Erlengzi and Li Yan's bullets hit the reanimated corpses' heads, it didn't have a significant impact.
I swiftly changed the magazine, aimed, and as soon as I pressed the trigger, I saw a stout figure wielding an AK-47 spitting fire, and the reanimated corpse's head exploded. Indeed, a bulls-eye shot.
With no further threats, the four of us redirected our guns, firing at the reanimated corpses on the opposing boat, where Old Wang and Liu Jingsheng were surrounded. The chubby guy even tossed aside his AK-47 and replaced it with the Remington he had picked up on the shore.
"Both of you, get down!" the chubby guy bellowed, pulling the trigger of his pump-action shotgun in quick succession. "Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!" Five shots rang out. Due to the close distance between the two boats, the powerful recoil of the shotgun sent the reanimated corpses surrounding Old Wang and Liu Jingsheng flying into the water.
"Don't just stand there! Come over!" the chubby guy yelled. Old Wang and Liu Jingsheng simultaneously jumped over to our boat. They had leapt halfway, about to reach our boat, when two reanimated corpses shot out of the water and tackled them midair. They struggled briefly before being dragged underwater. A minute later, their mutilated bodies floated to the surface.
Things happened too quickly. When I fired my gun again, Old Wang and Liu Jingsheng had already fallen into the water. Bullets lost their effectiveness in water and posed no threat to the reanimated corpses.
A minute later, their mutilated bodies floated to the surface. Watching my comrades sacrifice themselves one after another, a wave of anger surged within me, yet I couldn't find an outlet for it. More reanimated corpses began gathering on the water's surface, baring their teeth at us.
Suddenly, I remembered that the chubby guy still had something useful. "Give me the explosives!"
"What for?" The chubby guy was taken aback, then realized, "This is ten kilograms of plastic explosives; we'll blow ourselves up."
"Why waste words!" I directly dug out the transparent waterproof bag containing the plastic explosives and detonators from his bag. I threw them toward the cluster of reanimated corpses in the water. In the split second before the explosives hit the water, I aimed at the detonator and pulled the trigger.
"Boom!" A deafening sound erupted, sending a four to five-meter high column of water into the air, with stalactites falling from the ceiling. Accompanying the falling stalactites were the dismembered remains of reanimated corpses.
The blast nearly capsized the boat I was standing on. The four of us, clutching the boat's gunwale, fought to avoid being thrown off. Half a minute later, the boat finally stabilized.
"Couldn't you have thrown half of them?" The chubby guy was almost sprawled on the boat, glaring at me.
When I threw the explosives just now, my mind had gone blank, consumed by a suicidal impulse akin to the reanimated corpses. Now, looking back, I shuddered with dread. "Could you not have reminded me?"
"Was there time for that? Did you give me a chance to talk?" The chubby guy's features were twisted in irritation.
"Is there a chance now? Can you give me a chance to talk?" Song Erlengzi and Li Yan interjected, their tones clearly siding with me. The chubby guy snorted and grumbled helplessly.
Li Yan looked at the water's surface with a heavy heart and said, "Let's retrieve Old Wang and their bodies."
A deep sorrow weighed on my heart as we worked together to retrieve the bodies of Old Wang and the others. We searched for the white-haired man's body, but no matter how hard we looked, we couldn't find it. Oh well,
