Final Breath

Was it her own choice, or did someone else make the choice for her?

"Unbelievable." I muttered mostly to myself as I saw the blank stare he had gazing back onto me.

"What!" He shouted.

I slowly began backing myself towards the edge of the ship, "I should've known. I should've-"

"She meant nothing, Lydia!" He shouted at me once more, "I swear!"

"If she meant nothing-"

"She didn't! Honest!"

"-Why wouldn't you tell me about her? About the two of you hanging out... the two of you spending time alone with one another?"

"Jesus Christ, Lydia!" He smacked his palm against his forehead, "Have you always been this jealous skank?"

"Charlie!" I gasped. My back smacked into the railing, signaling to my brain that now is time to stop backing up. "I trusted you. You swore to me that you would never do it again. You swore to me that she was the past. You swore to me, Charlie. You-"

"She is the past!" He told me, stepping forward. His fingers grasped around my forearm, as his nails dug themselves into my skin. "What do I have to do for you to get that in your thick skull?" He pointed to his head with the hand he wasn't using to hold me in place.

"Char." I winced as his fingers dug themselves deeper into my skin, "Charlie, let go. Y-You're hurting me, Char. You're hurting-"

"Oh, suck it up." He pulled me towards him. Our bodies pressed up against one another as our eyes locked. A smile crept across his face.

"Charlie." I tried to free myself from his grip, but all the fighting just made him grip harder.

"Where do you think you're going?" He asked me.

"Please let me go." I pleaded.

"Don't you want me to prove that you're the only girl?"

"What?" I looked towards him. His smile was wider now. There was a proudness glistening in his eye. He looked almost... satisfied with himself.

He leaned down, whispering into my ear, "Too bad you chose to come out here late at night... You know just how much I love an audience."

"Charlie, stop it." I tried to break from his grip, "You're scaring me, Char."

"The fighting is the best part." He smiled.

"I'm sorry, Char. I'm sorry." I found myself pleading him with tears brimming my eyeline. "I never should have brought her up. I'm sorry."

He ran his hand down my waist, squeezing my thigh before ripping my leggings off my thighs in merely seconds. "You know it's too late for that." He smiled, "You started this, you know."

"Please." I begged him, "Don't do this."

He grabbed my buttocks, lifting me up onto the ship's railing before wrapping my legs around his back. He pressed his jeans up against me as he spoke gently into my ear, "You know what? Maybe I did love her more than you... I've never considered doing this with her." After he spoke, he pushed himself off of me... untangling my legs from his torso and letting go of my arm. "I'm so sorry, Lydia." He spoke with sudden sorrow.

"You don't deserve this." He gazed into my eyes, "You don't deserve the life that was carved out for you." He held onto the railing so that I remained boxed between him and the railing.

"No." I cupped my hands around his cheeks, "You didn't deserve this. I was being jealous... I should've trusted you."

"You really shouldn't have."

"What?"

"You shouldn't have trusted me."

"Charlie?" I asked him, "Was she-? Did you-?"

"No." He snapped, "Me and her... We're old news. That's all you have to remember." His lips pressed against my forehead, "I want you to remember the love I held for you."

"You're scaring me."

"I love you, Lydia." He told me, "I will always love you."

"I love you too, Charlie." I smiled.

He leaned in, just inches from my lips, "But I chose her."

The wind picked up. The boat grew larger as I began falling further and further away from where Charlie had been standing. Has the ship always been this big? The propellers looked even scarier as I neared closer to them- almost sharper than when I boarded. Charlie was becoming smaller now. Almost like a spec of dirt in the distance. A tiny ant watching from afar. His gaze never seemed to break away from mine.

Splash!

The water was frigid. The waves rippled over me as I felt myself sink. My clothes felt like weights as the water covered over them. My body falling deeper and deeper. I wanted to scream... wanted to call out for help... wanted for someone to notice there was a person trapped out at sea... but the water came at me fast. Soon enough, my entire body was submerged. I tried to get one final sound out, but the water beat me to it.

I sunk... further down into the abyss. Soon to become one with the fishes.

Oh God, please don't let him get away with this.
