The streets were full of the sound of many cars coming and going, with the scornful disdains of proud scoffers mocking and bickering with their earnest claims with regards to the right of way. The constant screams from perceived offenses continued as the street lights boldly declared that the pedestrians had the right of way. “Oh, come on! You didn’t move fast enough! I have work to get done today, you dult!” an Old Man scornfully mocked. “Oh, will you shut up? The light was yellow, and I didn’t have the time! Shut your trap, you dimwit!” A middle aged man retaliated as waved his hand out the window. The constant honking and raging went throughout the streets of the city, as I continued to read next to the statue of a giant bull next to the county library.
“Martha! Martha! What is it with this place? It seems like everyone’s constantly raging and scoffing at each other!” A familiar voice noted. I turned my eyes towards a blonde woman approaching me in her coat and sneakers.
“Well, it is the big city, and the traffic usually gets pretty bad in the morning, Debbie! I’ve had to learn to tune them out while I get lost in a good book!” I replied. Debbie started scoffing. The absurdity of it all seemed to overwhelm her. “I, just can’t imagine this much shouting and screaming while driving!” Debbie noted. My eyes looked up at her shrewdly. “You’ve clearly never driven much, haven’t you? Because road rage like this, happens all the time! ‘I’m right, and you were in my way!’ ‘No, I had the right of way, and you need to apologize to me!’ The same old sad story told many times over!” I teased lightly.
“Martha, for your information, I have driven for a long time! I just prefer self-control and not becoming angry! It doesn’t do a person much good to get this angry on the road!” Debbie scolded. “I’m sure you’re one, perfect little angel, aren’t you?” I teased again. “Are you making fun of me?” Debbie asked with a sense of outrage. “Oh, you just found out?” I sarcastically responded.
Debbie started becoming visibly upset, her palm cuffed into a fist as I started snickering. “Anyways, we were going to get coffee and talk over a book, right?” I asked. Debbie sighed. “Yes, we were going to get coffee and talk over the latest romance novel,” Debbie sighed. The sound of a car screeching and crashing into things suddenly thundered in the air, as cops began pursuing a red car. The red car kept turning around, trying to trip the cops up as it attempted to then accelerate when it saw a door of opportunity. It thundered the pedal, and went speeding by, riding on the side of the curb in the process! “Debbie, look out!” I screamed as I pulled her away right before the car rode past us, and the stampede of cop cars followed after her. The newspapers shot from the street, jumping into the air and the dust bunnies doing their dance upon the wind.
Debbie started panting as what had just happened started to hit her. “You, you just saved my life from that raging madman! Martha, thank you so much for your help, I appreciate this! I can never repay you for this!” Debbie responded. “No, but you can pay for the coffee for today, and we’ll call it even!” I shrewdly implied. Debbie sighed. “Fine, drink’s are on me today. Leave it to you to try and get what you can out of me, even in my moments of vulnerability,” Debbie replied. I snickered. “Hey, you said you could never repay me! I respectfully disagree!” I stated. Debbie rolled her eyes at me. I laughed, as we strolled towards the coffee shop.
