[10:07] Lower New York Bay, Endorra [40.534995, -74.021218]
Aligned Regional Administration Codex (RAC) and Steepin Wellspring Corp (SWC) recording:
“I’m telling you Mike, something isn’t right. Nox and Ramirez have noted multiple losses from standard and analytic subsystems. Nox referred to it as a creep. Something to the effect of it seeming to have etiquette. I’ve been with you eleven years now Captain, please be straight with me; I, nor my family can go through another probation.”
Eduardo Salazar, Chief-mate
“When they enter the booth, etiquette.”
Mike Goatherd, Captain
“Clearly those containers were tagged from start. They forced us…,”
The Endorra, now in tow, has been boarded by the private bay police; (SWC). Prior to the intercept, the Endorra was enroute to Albany New York, having departed Cyprus. The boarding interceptor and tow were preceded with accompanying helicopters as a coercion of escort. The ship’s crew have been instructed to queue port side; senior deck staff to remain in the pilots booth.
“Richards, find out if Khalil and Khun have concluded their investigations, and give us the room.”
“Sir.”
Bian Richards, Second-mate
…
“Captain…,”
“Just so there’s no dissolution, what happened, was meant to happen.”
“Meant Mike; meant?! We have one dead and four MIA. We have four containers stolen…, the reefers were set to twenty-one degrees. All our containers are set at negative sixty, biotech and bio-meds…, standard temp.”
…
…,”You know what’s above fifteen degrees…, livestock!”
…
…, “Wellspring have cargo aboard this ship. I’m sure they are here to assess loss or damages, and report what is, and send a scout. ”
“Scout! _their copters ushered us to the inlet; the telemetry had no other copters in any search pattern of this ship when they began the escort.”
“They are on the stairs, when they enter you know two things; an unknown vessel docked and boarded without our knowledge, and a column of four sky-cranes removed two TEU and two FEU under guard of two gunships. Are we in league?”
…,“Sir…,”
The boarding Steepin Wellspring agents ascending the ship, split upon planting foot on deck. The commanding officer and accompaniment focused on the piloting booth are in lock step; the local agents interview the Engine Control Room (ECR) and steward crew. A clamor of in sync steps approach the closed door; a knock.
“Chief-mate Salazar, the Endorra’s Captain,”
“Goatherd, welcome.”
“Chief Officer Marques, agents Paul, and Aubrey”
Chief Security Officer Kel Marques, SWC
…
“Chief Marques, am I to assume your escort is for our protection?”
…, “As I’m sure your DLC (Digital LAN Censor) provided accurate telemetry once you left international waters, correct?”
“Yes, as you can see there are no errors displayed or flashing.”
“And the local shipping traffic was displayed prior to queue into the bay?”
“Correct.”
“The transcript we’ve taken from RAC and SWC servers, at one nineteen local, there were two hundred thirty-eight moving vessels in the Lower Bay when the interrupted distress call went out, the Endorra was approximately eighty nautical miles out from Lower New York Bay traveling at fourteen knots, can you confirm this?”
“Yes, as is set by protocol.”
“I will ask that my agent confirm that.”
“Have at it, the dock is the slot below the monitor.”
“Thank you; agent Paul”
…
“Chief, the Endorra’s data is consistent with SWC and RAC, sir.”
Local Agent Oleg Paul, SWC Bay Response Unit (BRU)
…
“The distress recorder attained multiple level distress calls to the pilots booth and RAC. Loss of power, leading to a misconstrued navigation, in-turn sending the Endorra adrift for thirteen minutes. Bringing us to why we are here; to authenticate what may or may not have been recorded by RAC. Before we begin, can you call the missing crew back to the booth; our imagery shows five heads in the booth were as I speak to two, thank you.”
“Chief Salazar to Second-mate, return with crew to the booth.”
…
“Sir.”
“Welcome and introduce yourself to Chief Marques of SWC.”
“Sir, Second-mate Richards, the Endorra’s Third-mate,”
“Sir, Third-mate Michaels, the Endorra’s Cadet,”
Hannah Michaels, Third-mate
“Sir, Cadet Thibodeau of the Endorra.”
Jakari Thibodeau Cadet
“Thank you crew.”
…
“Captain, have the ships systems updated your freight volume.”
“A comprehensive search of Agent Aubrey’s tele-pad connectivity data should confirm the Endorra’s current shipping volume and any other occurred discrepancies.”
…
“Yes, as of entering the harbor, the Endorra is currently at eighteen hundred volume and has forty-two TEU and twelve FEU, with twenty personnel on board, sir.”
Local Agent Dualla Aubrey, BRU
“Shall I play the transmission?”
“Please.”
ECR to deck; there is something foreign on our outer hull, are you reporting drag.
Stewart Adams to deck; confirm, noise on outer hull.
Third-mate to Engineering; confirm, standby.
Stewart Klein; there are four birds on approach; northwest 340!
ECR to Deck; something is draining the capici…
Mika Adams, Chief-Steward
Davey Klein, Steward Assistant
[10:22]
“Thank you agent Paul. Captain can you fill in what took place before the distress call at one nineteen am?
…, “At one ten am, our first call from ECR was received. Our electrician complained of distortions in distribution telemetry. He called for a system reset, I granted. The electrician, Nox began the shutdown protocol…,”
“Im sorry, can you detail the shutdown protocol.”
…,”Prior to a system hard reset, subsystems required to maintain the ships heading, need to be independent during the reset. The subsystems switch to their local power source, and remain active while the main system is purged and reset.”
…,
“thank you, continue.”
…, “Our electrician Nox started the reset. Powering the individual subsystems is a fifteen-minute process. Our collision detector went off at one seventeen. I called for a halt to the reset. Ramirez, the first voice on your recording, originally asked of a deck collision occurring. I sent third-mate Michaels to the top deck to assess the possible damage to our port side hull. Report from ECR has Nox exiting the ECR with our Third-mate, Kim, and ECR-cadet Lamont in tow.”
“Excuse me sir,”
Nina Trask, SWC Aegis Rush Unit (ARU)
“Agent Trask, Captain Goatherd of the Endorra; Captain, agents Trask, Michaels, and Sunder.”
…
“What do you have to report agent?”
“We’ve completed our walkthrough and interview of the crew. The crew list has been sent to your tele-pad as well as a preliminary report. As for the cargo manifest, two TEU and two FEU reefer containers were removed. Port side hull, proximal to nest, has indications of mag-clamps.”
…
“Anything else agent?
“No, sir.”
“Thank you. Captain would like to continue with any further detail before we conclude with agent Trask’s findings?”
…, “The for mentioned crew heading topside met with Michaels. Michaels confirms that a vessel was in contact with the hull. Michaels continuing the investigation of the port side, brought them out of our periphery; a flash and muffled pop occurred. The crew ushered into retreat under gunpoint, never entering our line of sight; the crew was ordered to the deck. Third-mate Michaels can fill in the details of the happenings on the deck.”
“Sir, yes…,”
“Is there a description of the vessel you can provide, Third-mate Michaels; did the vessel power off across the surface or descend beneath upon departure?
“Yes, Agent Marques…,”
“Chief Marques, thank you; continue”
“Chief Marques…, yes to detail the Captain’s statement, the attached ship or drone was approximately twenty-five to forty meters in length, unknown width, and if the orientation is correct, only about six to ten meters in height. The sound from the ECR was more of a crawl then a latch and bump if you will. This being why the interpretation is opened to unmanned.”
…, “Thank you. Please continue with your arrival topside.”
…, “Nox, Kim, and Lamont ran upon my path as stepped topside. The infiltration squad on our deck came in wet; again, why is the vessel class ID still open. As a show of force…,”
…
…, “As a show of force, Nox was shot; single bullet to the head.”
…
…, “the advancing squad, disregarded Electrician Noxs’ body overboard. We were in retreat upon gunfire when they ordered us to the deck.”
…
…, “Thank you.”
…
“Agent Trask your report; thank you.”
“Yes, agents Paul and Aubrey’s updated data to SWC servers confirm our findings and are now sourced with imagery, may I throw it to your ships monitors Captain?”
“Go right ahead,”
…
…,”As you can see in the image, the hull between cargo holds four and five have six clear impressions of mag-clamps. Data collected from the impressions found elements of an impermanent substance. This substance traced the mag-clamp path to water surface. We sent a drone under; …,”
“Fuck me _that was the…,”
“Captain?”
“Yes, as the Captain has ascertained, the unknown vessel was a part of a set that may have departed the Mediterranean with the Endorra; twelve mag-clamp impressions.”
“Second-mate, go topside and prepare for rest; Third-mate dial up HOPE.”
“Ca..Captain?”
“That’s an order Richard’s.”
“Chief.”
“Michaels you’ll need this to complete the call, use the Captains tele-pad; break that only when prompted to.”
“Chief.”
…
“Captain Goatherd what is the reason for the escalation?”
“Thank you Chief Marques and SWC, but I’ll insist the tow embark, and you recall the interceptor. We are to remain anchored off lane until further instructed.”
…
…, “As you wish Captain; anything further we can assist with?”
“No, thank you; confirming our findings, as well as all data is greatly appreciated; again thank you.”
“Chief Marques if you please…,”
…, “A pleasure; agents. …: Have a good day Captain.”
The Steepin Wellspring agents depart from the Endorra. Their Interceptor heads towards Upper New York Bay as the tow remains lingering about the Lower Bay.
“Captain, may I ask?”
…,
“Why are we to anchor?”
…, “As you mentioned earlier, there were no scouts. Not one response unit to an interrupted distress call.”
…, “Do you think they were a part of the assault?”
“Perhaps not our guests…; bell Richards, have him instruct Ramirez to have us ramped up in ten, also, ring the bosun to my room once he is done with rest prep. If, I don’t return by the time we are warm, set us east 80 at eight knots, try to land us ten k from Sandy.”
The Captain leaves the booth leaving Salazar has the helm, along with Richards, and Thibedeau. Ramirez has entered the ECR with its remaining crew. Michaels queued for HOPE awaits the Captain. The Bosun has arrived at the Captain’s room, and knocks; waiting to be summoned.
“Whoever it is, wait.”
“I placed the call sir, I was prompted to insert the device, since it’s been waiting; no human contact.”
“There won’t be. Remain on hold until HOPE prompts the destruction of that key.”
“Sir.”
…
“Enter.”
“Captain.”
Gary Khalil, Bosun
“Were you able to gather anything from our departed?
…, “The interceptor has zero data for four days now, it hasn’t left dock. There is no known coordination data between SWC and our incident. However, the copters weren’t SWC and didn’t seem to land anywhere inside of Endorra’s per view as of reset. I was able to ~ascertain an image for tact and discovery…,”
“Who’s badge is that?”
“An upcoming private philanthropist, Helix Soar; as to why a green bio-fuel company has N class gunships hasn’t been descried.”
…,
“As for data query, SWC is as lost. One other thing,”
…,
“There is a recognized discrepancy in our data, noted and unmentioned by the SWC.”
“Thank you Khalil. Have Anders back up all telemetric devices, purged and recalibrated. Scan the backup for any discrepancies between us leaving port, the recall to Cyprus, through to the theft, and current. I’ll send Richards when I return to the booth.”
“Sir?”
…, “Something isn’t right; pending the ramp we should be at rest by noon, I’ll have more then, thank you.”
“Sir.”
“Anything yet Michaels?”
“A request to flip the key on the dock and remain with my index on this biometric; a rolling sequence of data but no contact.”
“Summon the booth when there is.”
The Captain exits, stopping topside before returning to the booth. QMED Khun has returned to ECR; Ramirez has Endorra ready to reposition outside of the bay. Michaels remains holding for HOPE as Khalil continues his investigation. The Captain on his first walk of the deck in the light, has broadened the query; Kahlil is on approach to the Captain.
…
…,”Captain?”
“Next one down.”
…,”I see you have found the ladder stage of my investigation. What’s that?”
“One of the sealing plugs from the missing containers, has a scent to it I can’t place.”
“Perfume. I thought it was me; I’ve been smelling it since we left Cyprus. The restaurant the shipper got for us, the girls in the dinner show were wearing it. I thought I was stroking out as we crossed or I had lodged a laced nudnik with the smell in my nostril.”
…
“Shit…, I knew this fucking doat; an old, old friends nephew.”
“Perhaps one of our guests was wearing some in the attack.”
…, “Yeah perhaps; what do you have?”
“I found multiple locations of struggle from the galley to the mess. It looked like a hasty retreat from our encounter. That is until I noticed Belan’s knives; one was placed back dirty, another with cal-mag at the tip.”
“Old, venerated family of Michelin chefs, Continue,”
“Multiple surface top edges had friction skin stuck on them, which I assumed, and now can confirm, is from Belens’ bare arms. This led them out of the galley into mess where there were only two drop mats laid out, side by side, instead of leading to and from galley to hall. Pulling up the mat, viscid blood from the uncleaned mat. By the traffic to the mop closet, two may have jumped him; which you may or may not know, the three mats are hung over the drain to be cleaned. And the third mat…,”
“He’s wrapped in. Let’s head up, I’ll have Khun and Makara place him up proper.”
As the Captain ascends the stairs to the booth, he overhears a heated discourse between Bosun Khalil and Chief Salazar. The door swings open as his hand grabs for the handle.
“Oh shi.., Captain.”
Thom Richards, Second-Engineer
“What is this?”
“Excuse me, Captain, I was searching for Khun. Makara found a backup medic bag, seal broken; didn’t know what was removed though. As for that…, paranoia; heading home, sir.”
“Go ahead; …,”
…
…, “Quiet down; I have more distressing news…: Belen friend and Chef, isn’t MIA as we assumed, he’s been killed.”
…
“Was he jogging topside when they attacked?”
Marlene Anders, First-Engineer
“No…,”
…
…, “No, where was he killed, where is he now?”
“I will have all that information as soon as we have finished gathering the facts, I don’t want to raise alarm and frenzied speculation, just be prepared to disembark within the hour; thank you.”
“Sorry to hear that Mike, I know how close you are to his family.”
“Thanks Chief.”
“What’s with the drain plug?”
“It must have fell off one of the stolen containers.”
“Usually they’re tethered; look, that nub is where it was severed.”
…, “Chief you have the deck, call out the assignments as you see fit when she is on position.”
“Captain.”
…
“Richards, get Anders and have her assist you and the dayworkers anchor, we don’t need the crew a twist in mental ruin; and who the fuck smells like…:”
