After all the laughter had subsided Lyla looked at the girls and jokingly asked, "so I take it you guys couldn't wait for us to come down the stairs to start this?"
"You thought we wouldn't follow you up the stairs? You, of all people, brought someone home with you - to stay with us," Ann blurted out. Everyone nodded, agreeing with what she said, because they were all thinking it. She sashayed over to Lyla and Alex and circled around them like a predator circling its prey. She reached out to touch Alex's chest inquisitively, so as to find out what lay under his shirt, but before she could Lyla snatched her hand.
"Did you bother to ask first," Lyla asked, not quite mad, but not content either.
"Ask You? Or this fine specimen?" She asked flirtily, still circling him, and sizing him up. Alex shrugged, as if to say, 'go ahead, I don't care', and so she did. She was pleased to find his well-defined muscles underneath the cloth, so she ceased her flirty investigation. She went back to the couch and pick up the remote; she began searching through movies as if she hadn't just felt a man up with no explanation, not even seconds ago.
"I wonder if this is how animals feel at the zoo, and if it is then I don't think I'll ever go again," Alex joked with a slight chuckle. He then proceeded to the end of the couch that housed no ladies, at the moment, and just as he did Serena closed in on him; she was almost on his lap. Alex only wished he could scoot away, and with a short glance at Lyla he gulped down his uncertainty and endured whatever was to come next.
"So, you said you weren't from here? What brings you to the land of cowboys and Whataburger?" she asked.
"Well, my mother is the head of the math department over at Sweet Lake, and I was in town to visit her since classes are now out," he said. Sweet Lake was the name of their school. "And before you ask, yes I chose not to go to the school my mom works at," he blurted out - he could see the wheels turning in their heads and didn't want to hear it asked anyways. He was used to people asking that question, and to be honest he decided not to follow his mom to Texas because he didn't want her hounding him for his grades while he would be attending. Not that he had to worry, but he wanted to eliminate the possibility all together.
Lyla then made herself comfortable on the floor between Serena's legs, then tipped her head back. It was their way of asking each other if the other could braid their hair. Serena promptly started undoing the bun that sat on top of Lyla's head unleashing a cascade of beautiful, brown ringlets down her back. Alex was very intrigued by this. He found it hard to tell that it could curl when it was in the bun because she had it pulled back so smoothly earlier.
Serena continued to play in Lyla's hair while she decided what style she would go for, and they all had finally decided on a movie to watch since Ann had been looking for one. Alex then offered to buy the takeout to go with the movie, but Ann explained the relationship with Lyla and her 'sperm donor'. "He pays for everything," she sang, and laughter rang out in the room, "we mostly just used his card that he left with Lyla, and he hasn't seemed to care; granted we don't go overboard with it, but it comes in handy sometimes." She finished punching in their order for Italian and put on some background music while they waited for the food to be delivered. She queued up the movie they chose, Patch Adams, since half of the residents in the home were learning in some sort of medical specialty.
Alex had no idea what it was and why the girls were getting excited about it. "It's a comedy - a medical comedy," Lyla said as she whipped around beaming with pure joy.
"But, why would you guys want to watch it," he asked, because he was very skeptical about watching anything to do with medicine in the first place. Carly and Lyla looked at him astonished, and almost as if they were offended by this new discovery that he might not like medical movies.
"I am studying to be a Vet, and Lyla here is a Pre-med student, so that is why we like watching this movie," Carly said with certainty.
"That makes sense, but what about the other three here."
"I'm a Teacher's Assistant that's studying to be a teacher," that was Ann, with a curt smile. "I found it to be a very heartfelt movie, and quite funny," she added. She was no longer the girl who had roamed his body an hour before, and she had no intention of showing that she had just been toying with him.
"You know that I'm an art major, but Lyla and I have been watching this movie for a long while, and have loved every second of it," Serena chimed in; finally finishing Lyla's hair with a braid and lightly bopping her on the forehead with it. "Jessica here, doesn't go to Sweet Lake with us. I picked her up at one of the cafes," she flashed a playful smile over to Jessica. She did a lot of talking for her, because she knew she was a very shy person, but she didn't mind it. Neither of them did.
"I guess I can be okay with those answers," he said, actually very content with the responses he received. As he settled back into the couch the doorbell rang through the condo, and he jumped up to his feet. He only thought it polite that he should get the food from the door since his hosts bought it. He received the bags and boxes of food from the delivery boy and tipped him quite well since he hadn't really contributed to paying for the meal. "Soups on," he called to the ladies.
They all claimed their meals and headed back to the couch and started the movie, and as they watched he had seen why they chose to get Italian to eat while watching the movie. He even brought it up to them, and they all nodded silently to him because they were all immersed in the movie. Somewhere near the end of the movie he nudged Lyla with his knee because she had finished eating and he wanted to ask her a question.
"I had no idea you were pre-med," he said to her. He was intrigued by this tidbit of information.
"Yeah, ever since I was little. I've always been in love with surgeries and medicine and helping people heal," she smiled up at him. She eventually had gotten to a point in the evening where she could no longer keep her eyes open, so she said her goodnights and headed upstairs. After they heard the door click Serena shifted her view from the movie over to Alex.
"What are your intentions with my best friend?" she asked with concern in her face, "she has never shown interest in anyone before you, and here you are in our home after meeting her for one day. You seem to be getting quite chummy with her, but I will tell you now; if you hurt her in any way, then I will find you all the way down in Florida." She had so much conviction in her voice as she whispered to him, but he wasn't even sure what he felt towards Lyla besides the need to find out more about her.
"I promise I have no intentions of hurting her; we're just getting to know each other. That's all. At least, I think that's all," he said, still pondering the last part of his statement. He couldn't pay attention to the movie after that so he decided to head upstairs to his room as well; prepared for what the week held for him, but not quite sure what it would lead to. He plugged in his phone to the charger on the desk and stripped down to his boxers. He then climbed under the sheets ready to be taken away by blissful rest, and after a few times tossing and turning he finally fell into a relaxing sleep. He dreamt of Lyla that night after only knowing her for a day, and he was content with that.
