Elven Artifact of the Lost City
Sir Roland's Journey

There weren’t always dragons in the Valley, once there was a glorious city built by the ancient Elven folk that has since passed into the astral plains far from mortal eyes. Now their city lies in ruin in this abysmal lonely valley where hungry dragon screeches can be heard echoing up into the mountains, where many wicked dark beasts stalk beneath the dragon’s nests waiting for a few morsels to fall through. It has been said that a magical artifact is hidden deep within the ancient city, an artifact so powerful that if put into the wrong hands could destroy everything. It seems the dragons and beasts are there to guard such a dangerous artifact.
Some say, its an orb of wisdom, that drives those who possess it go mad. Others say, its a sword dropped by a fallen God and whomever uses it will become mad with power, thus destroying themselves. Some say, it’s a crystal of manipulation, that once acquired will slowly whittle away at a person’s mental defenses and turn them into a gold hungry puppet with the crystal pulling their strings. Whatever this artifact is or isn’t doesn’t matter. I have been requested to investigate this place and find the source that calls the dragons here. The King has sent a great number of men in to investigate, but none have returned. Now, it’s up to me to find them.
Ah, how foolish of me. I have failed to introduce myself, I am Sir Roland of Glade Wells. I hope I am using this journaling sphere correctly. His Majesty, has sent me here to investigate. I am a well trained soldier, dabbled in mage craft, decent healer, a few unorthodox magics tucked away just in case I need them, and mental control powers that out match even the best psychics in our world, but enough about me. I have found a good place to setup camp for the evening. I do hope I am low enough into these mountains. Don’t want the dragons to spot me. So far, I haven’t seen any signs that the many groups that came before me, which is quite concerning. Most of them were knights, some mages, some clerics believing they needed to cleanse the place for the dragons to go.
I fear that they were wrong along with the mages believing a barrier was needed to be put around it to seal in whatever wicked power lies at the heart of this city. It bothers me personally that I can’t find a single piece of armor, spell book, religious staff, or clothing. It’s almost like they have vanished from the realm. More likely they met an untimely death due to the dragons taking notice of them. From here on I shall make no camp fires as not to be noticed and meet the same fate. Well now that I have said all that I need to set a barrier spell around my camp for the night. This forest is still and silent, a dangerous thing to be sure. Where there is silence, there is death. Now, let me see here. Where did I put that powder? Ah, there you are. Now to carefully sprinkle this obsidian powder around the perimeter this will only take a moment. Oh, here we go.
With this enchanted powder I decreet no evil being of physical or astral form be able to enter my camp while I sleep. The mighty ancient Gods above protect me in my sleep, so I may continue my journey. Ow… That blue flash at the end gets me every time. Now that it’s done I think it’s time for me to rest. Night is falling quickly and I actually don’t wish to see what’s lurking out there. I will be back at sunrise with an update of how the night went and if I slept. Good night, little journal.
