That afternoon, I dug a kind of herb called rooibos in the sun of the big black mountain, tired and dripping with sweat, and dry mouth. On my way home, I wanted to turn to the big bay pond of the Roseau River to have a drink and a bath to relieve my fatigue. In the long dry season in Xishuangbanna, the sun is as hot as a flame, the air is as dry as a match can be lit, the leaves are scorched yellow, ponds dried up, streams cut off, a hundred-mile radius of the big black mountain only that winding through the valley bottom of the Roseau River is the only source of water.
This area is a nature reserve, no one is in sight, and tropical rainforest layer upon layer. The sun was setting, and the heat was cooler than ever. I walked along the elephant tunnel, almost out of the old forest, suddenly, I heard the sound of footsteps and noisy chirping, cows mooing sheep bleating horses neighing deer roaring pigs roaring dogs barking jackals whistling chickens crowing ducks quacking rabbits squeaking, sounding like a nomadic tribe carrying livestock and poultry in the rush. I was afraid of an unpredictable encounter and hurriedly left the elephant canal into an impermeable shrub forest, after hiding on the ground, gently plucked the branches and vines to look over, could not believe their eyes, in the Roseau River, the edge of the woods, crowded with bison, gazelle, pan sheep, wild boar, jackals, dogs, pig badgers, horse deer, grass rabbits, weasels, peacocks, white pheasants, pheasants and other 20 to 30 species of animals, large and small, about one or two hundred, like a fairy tale It was like a meeting of the animals in the forest**. There was not much space, so many animals gathered together, and at one moment the wild boar bumped into the wild cow, and at another moment the grass rabbit stepped on the pheasant, so the order was a bit chaotic. The vast majority of them are herbivores, but there are also omnivores wild boars, and pig badgers, as well as a habitual chicken-stealing weasel and two red-haired jackals belonging to the class of carnivorous beasts. Strangely enough, the weasel did not pounce on the white pheasant that was close by, and the horse deer did not seem to be afraid of the red-haired jackals that were crouching beside them.
I don't believe that different kinds of animals would meet together like people, especially carnivores and herbivores, which are born to eat and be eaten in a hostile relationship, how can they live together peacefully? Something very special must have happened to force these animals to flock together. I looked carefully, the pair of red-haired jackals, tongue dragged long, dry as a sun-dried eggplant, jackal eyes greedily looking at the Roseau River; bison and gazelles licking their dry lips; peacocks open mouth, intermittent hoarse cry ...... Oh, I see, these animals in the heat of the mountain activities all day, extreme thirst, or Has been thirsty throat smoke, fire burning like unbearable, at dusk to think of Roseau River full of drinking a pass, bathing, and cooling. Because of being too thirsty, inhibited the impulse of the red-haired jackal hunting, only interested in water, and indifferent to the nearby hunting objects. Due to the anxiety of thinking about water, the pan sheep and horse deer forget the danger around them.
It should be noted that the terrain of Daheishan is treacherous, and the Roseau River flows between the mountains, and the hundreds of miles of river banks in this area are cliffs, and only the apes are capable of climbing down from the cliffs to the river to drink. Da Wan Tang is an opening between two mountain ranges and is the only flat passage from the forest to the river. In the dry season, many animals in the Big Black Mountain can only go to the Great Bay Pond to drink.
They are unbearably thirsty, and the misting Roseau River is right in front of them, walking from the edge of the forest, crossing a 50-60 meter wide white sand beach, they can enjoy the river, why do they linger? My curious eyes stretched toward the river, and everything became clear after just one look. On the dazzling white sandy beach, five or six big baked fish were lying, and another seven or eight crocodiles were swimming in the river. This is a typical Ganges crocodile, the skin is dark olive, rough as if cloaked in a layer of scale armor, the largest one is about five meters long, revealing a mouthful of jagged sharp teeth, making people frightened. These fierce crocodiles make the quiet Great Bay Pond become bloody horror, turned into a veritable slaughterhouse, whether you are a bison or a red-haired jackal, as long as a cross into the Roseau River, will be bitten by these crocodile's legs and dragged into the heart of the river drowned alive, torn into pieces.
The crocodiles that look clumsy and sluggish on the shore become light and nimble once they are in the water, so powerful that even the Bengal tigers have to be afraid of them.
These crocodiles waiting in the big bay pond, looking at the animals tramping around the edge of the woods, are waiting for them to go to their death!
Just then, I heard a loud and majestic elephant roar from behind, the branches swayed, birds flew, and in a moment, the spectacular green canal between the trees, seven elephants and a mammoth, in a column, marching majestically toward the big pond, led by a tall, sturdy male elephant, tile gray skin glowing with oil, two long tusks flashing cold.
As soon as they saw the elephant herd arrive, all the animals were glowing with joyful expressions, the bison mooed and cheered, the deer jumped and danced, the peacocks opened their screens to express their splendid celebration, and even the two red-haired jackals kept wagging their tails in grand welcome. The scene was as if a savior had finally arrived.
The herd of elephants came out of the woods and spread out into a fan shape on the white sandy beach, waving their long trunks, pouting their tusks, roaring, and striding forward. The animals happily followed the elephants and swarmed to the river.
Those crocodiles hanging out on the beach to bask in the sun just now is still alive and well, once they see the elephants pressed, they immediately turn around and leap into the river.
In the Xishuangbanna forest, only elephants are not afraid of crocodiles. Elephants weigh several tons, any type of crocodile, is easy to shake the mountain, hard to shake the elephant. Elephant hooves can flatten the head of crocodiles, tusks can stab through the body of crocodiles, and the trunk can split the spine of crocodiles, so as long as the elephant herd in the river bathing and drawing water, crocodiles will be wise to swim away.
Seven adult elephants crossed into the river, each elephant a certain distance apart, and walked out twenty meters to a depth of about one meter, laying an oval cordon in the shallow water. Animals following the elephants have jumped into this safe water, the big bay pond noisy and cheerful, splashing a clump of waves, in the magnificent evening sun changed the strange colors. I hid in the bushes and watched with itching eyes, I was so sweaty that I wanted to jump into the river and take a bath too. I think, so many different kinds of animals mixed, and then mixed with me so a person in, probably will not cause any trouble. The dry season of the Roseau River, crystal clear, with a fragrance of wildflowers, drink back sweet, soak a bubble to moisturize and nourish the skin, there are elephants standing guard for me for free, why do not I jump into the water to enjoy some? I made a snap decision, stripped naked, hands and feet, learned the crawling posture of animals, walked to the river, and jumped in.
The shallow beach is as lively as the animals in the carnival, the bison plowed a sand pit, the whole body buried, only to reveal two amber horns, the peacock pecked up a string of crystal water, combing their beautiful feathers, the wild boar like a highly efficient pumping machine purring a hard drink, belly bulging like a ball, and excrete out, very unhygienic, naughty deer and the mammoth played a water war, deer Running up a piece of water splashed on the mammoth, the mammoth trunk like a water gun to the deer spray ...... who did not pay attention to me, probably treat me as a kind of elephant light to drink water here ape-like animals.
At this time, five-meter-long crocodile thieves swim over, waving a large flat tail, giggling a fierce Zhazi, wanting to break through the cordon from the gap between the two elephants, the big male elephant alert, quickly catch up, raised the long trunk high, the momentum of the fierce chop down, right in the waist of the big crocodile, the big crocodile turned up the white belly, swim into the river bottom to escape.
Ou - Ou - elephants roar in anger, like beating huge war drums, shaking the river Kuma slightly trembling, the crocodiles swimming outside the cordon line have retreated.
Suddenly, a female elephant came up to her, and her long trunk rolled on her chest, shot out like a baton of goodwill, blocking her in front of the sheep, her pink beak emitting a soft bark as if to say, "Please be safe, don't go any further!
Immediately, the pan sheep obediently turned its head and returned to safe waters.
I noticed that the animals that came here to drink and bathe put their vigilance and caution behind them, the rabbits drank in front of the weasels, the deer played in front of the red-haired jackals, no one was wary of anyone, no one was hiding from anyone, it was a peaceful scene.
I was bathing, and a small antelope ran to me, I reached out and touched its back, it did not care, and foolishly licked my arm with his tongue. I suddenly had an idea that I could take advantage of the small antelope's lack of defense, I could use the rattan rope to put it around my neck, and after the bath, I could take it by the hand and go home for nothing!
I climbed back to the white sand beach, looking for a suitable rattan rope. Suddenly, the shallow beach came from the horse deer panic call, I turned my head to look, the original pair of red-haired jackals drank enough water to solve the thirst problem, and sprouted wild, wanting to catch the young horse deer. The carnivorous beasts can not change the nature of their hair and drink blood. The mother deer defended her baby and called for help. There are no wolves in Xishuangbanna, but jackals are the best hunters in the subtropical jungle, fierce, with high hunting skills, and courageous and resourceful. A red-haired jackal front up to the doe, and another red-haired jackal goes around behind the fawn and pounces on it with teeth bared ......
The big gray male elephant heard the doe's call after treading water quickly to the location of the accident, the action of the agile red-haired jackal jumped to mid-air, the jackal claws have been fast around the scared fawn, and the big gray male elephant is still several steps away from it, it is too late, then fast, the elephant trunk in the river fierce draw a mouthful of water, like a high-pressure faucet, a powerful jet of water, impartial shot in the ugly jackal head, the red-haired jackal was rushed to the body skewed The red-haired jackal was rushed to the body and fell into the water, flopping into the air. The red-haired jackal was not willing to fail, jumped up and wanted to show off, the big male elephant thunderous rage, pouting tusks mountain-like pressure over, the pair of red-haired jackals rushed to escape on the white sandy beach, the big male elephant chased up, a trunk kicked in a red-haired jackal's ass, the red-haired jackal rolled several feet away, scared shitless, wailing, fled into the woods.
I quietly threw away the vine rope I found again, I did not want to be beaten by the elephant.
The sun slipped down behind the peaks, the last glimmer of evening sun disappeared from the river, and a purple twilight spread quietly from the river valley. The big gray male elephant raised his trunk and let out a long roar as if hearing some kind of command, the animals climbed from the water to the shore elephant herd behind, and orderly began to evacuate the Roseau River.
I was also on my hands and knees, mixed in the middle of the herd of animals to withdraw from the shore, accidentally stepped on a slippery pebble full of moss, the body lost balance and fell waist-deep in the water, panicked, suddenly felt a soft arm to hold my waist, pull me up from the water, look up, wow, a female elephant to help me, with its long trunk hooked my waist. Whoo-hoo-hoo, its elephant mouth spit out a series of indistinct syllables as if to say to me, white naked ape, take it easy, go slowly.
Soon, all the animals were on the white beach, the peacocks, white pheasants, and pheasants were beating their wings and going into the dense woods, and the big gray elephant at the end was also stepping steadily onto the shore when something unexpected happened. The mother gazelle rushed into the river and baaed anxiously, trying to catch the little one on the shore, but the little gazelle played hide-and-seek with its mother and was unwilling to go to the shore.
The crocodiles that had been scared away by the elephants swarmed over again at dusk, glaring with greedy and hungry eyes, and quickly rushed towards the little gazelle.
Yoo-oo, Yoo-oo, the distraught female gazelle cried out mournfully.
The gray male elephant, who had already reached the shore, turned his head to look, went back down into the river, and ran to the baby gazelle, like a majestic guardian god, watching the crocodiles who had swum very close.
Finally, the naughty little antelope was caught up by its mother and safely evacuated from the white sandy beach and hidden in the dark and dense forest. The elephant breathed a long sigh of relief and put his long trunk on the bend of his tusk, the last one to leave the big bay pond.
Really like a loyal police officer, in the fulfillment of their sacred mission.
