The phone's sudden ring sliced through the quiet of the room, its shrill sound making Theodore’s heart skip a beat. He lunged for his bag, fingers fumbling in his haste to answer the call. Just as he managed to grasp the phone, the ringing stopped abruptly, leaving him with a mix of frustration and curiosity.

"Seriously? Of all the times for it to stop ringing," he muttered, shoving the bag aside with a sigh.

He took a moment to gather his thoughts before speaking. “I’ve been working on something really significant today. I recently signed up on Vocal.Media to write a story about a young girl who fell victim to a horrific crime. This isn’t just any story—it's a factual account, so it's crucial that I include perspectives from both the victim and the perpetrator to ensure accuracy. However, the perpetrator is actively evading justice, which has made my job incredibly challenging. Despite these obstacles, I’m determined to make sure he faces the consequences for his actions. The story needs to be published, and I believe it will draw a lot of readers on Vocal.Media, all eager to learn the truth.”

Grandma, who had been listening quietly, nodded with a mixture of concern and conviction. “Men need to exercise caution and responsibility. It’s crucial, but it’s also vital for girls to be encouraged to present themselves in a way that respects their dignity. It’s about minimizing the chances of them becoming victims, though it’s never their fault.”

Liam, who had been contemplating Grandma’s words, added thoughtfully, “We have to work together to create a supportive environment for girls. We need to empower them through education, open dialogue, and awareness campaigns. It’s our duty to restore hope and trust for those who have been silenced and victimized.”

Grandma’s eyes softened as she turned to stare at Liam with genuine admiration. “You know, I’m really impressed. I never realized you had such a thoughtful perspective on these issues.”

Liam gave a modest shrug, a smile playing on his lips. “Sometimes it takes a conversation to bring out what’s been on our minds. I’m just glad we’re talking about it.”

As the evening sun began its descent, casting a warm orange glow over everything, Theodore and I decided to indulge in one of our favorite pastimes—hide and seek. It was a cherished game between us, one that had helped me conquer my fear of being alone and separation. I would always pick the most ingenious hiding spots, delighting in the thrill of evading Theodore’s attempts to find me.

Tonight, though, the game didn’t quite have the same magic it once did. Our expansive compound, nestled close to Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, was filled with memories of our childhood adventures. The towering trees and well-trodden paths seemed to hold echoes of our laughter, and the moonlight that bathed the area felt like a beacon of the countless nights we had spent together, lost in our playful escapades.

I crept into my favorite hiding spot behind our water supply tank, trying to recreate the excitement of those past games. The cool evening air whispered through the leaves, and I could hear Theodore’s footsteps drawing nearer. He called out my name, a blend of anticipation and frustration in his voice.

“Come on, where are you hiding?” his voice carried through the dim light, a friendly challenge.

I held my breath, stifling a giggle as I heard him draw closer. The thrill of the chase was still there, even if it wasn’t as intense as it once was. I remembered the countless times he had managed to find me with his keen sense of determination. Each time, it had felt like a small victory, a testament to our bond and the joy we found in each other’s company.

As Theodore finally discovered me behind the bush, he grinned widely. “Gotcha! You’re getting better at hiding, though. I’ll have to step up my game!”

We laughed together, and for a moment, the world outside seemed to fade away. It was just the two of us, enjoying the simplicity of the game and the comfort of our shared memories.

Later that evening, as we sat on the porch, watching the stars emerge one by one, we talked about everything and nothing. The conversation drifted from our childhood games to the serious issues we had discussed earlier. It was a balance of lightheartedness and depth, a reminder of the many facets of life we navigated together.

“Do you think things will ever change?” I asked, my voice tinged with the uncertainty that had been on my mind.

Theodore looked thoughtful for a moment before answering. “Change is always possible, but it requires effort from all of us. By talking about these issues and taking action, we can make a difference. It might not be easy, but it’s worth it.”

I nodded, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. Our conversations, our games, and our shared experiences were all part of a larger journey. It was about finding balance and making a difference, both in our own lives and in the world around us.

As the night grew deeper, we continued to talk, our voices mingling with the sounds of the evening. The game of hide and seek had been a small but significant reminder of the bonds we shared and the importance of our efforts to create a better world. It was a comforting thought as we drifted off to sleep, knowing that together, we could face whatever challenges lay ahead.
