Dreamer - Chapter 44
don't be fooled by what others tell you

"Lex." Ace said again, "Hi."
"What's going on?" My eyes couldn't help but glance over at Rev, who had been standing close to Ace with his hands folded in front of his body. He looked almost.. heavenly.
"Where you been?" Rev laughed out, "We came in together, yet.. here you are.. coming in after me."
He has got to be kidding me. "I'm surprised you actually remembered that I was still behind you."
"My bad." He placed his hand on his heart, "I just wanted to see my best friend."
"I was the one who wanted-" I let out a sigh, "What's Trevor doing here?"
"T?" Ace asked, "He just wanted to check on how I was doing."
"Hi Lex." T smiled at me.
I let off a small wave. Should I tell them.. about Michael coming? No. Definitely not. It's bad enough I'm going to have to keep my main focus on making sure Rev never crosses his path while he's here; I am in no way informing him that he'll be here. "Don't you have a job to do?" I found myself asking T before I was able to process the words in my head.
"The patients aren't going anywhere." He responded back.
"Aren't you the doctor?"
"No." He held up his finger, "An intern. I barely get paid to do the bullshit those actual doctors refuse to do themselves."
I awkwardly found myself standing at the edge of Ace's bed now, fiddling with the edge of the blanket covering his bottom half.
"Isn't there anything you'd want to tell me, Lex?" Ace pulled me out of my trance.
"What?"
Rev looked down at his palms.
"You've got to be kidding me." I said, mostly towards Rev but the whole room had to have heard me.
"Don't turn to him." T told me, "Ace is speaking to yo-"
"T." Ace scolded him.
"I was just-"
"Go back to your job, T." Ace told him and with that he was heading back onto the floor. I never pictured T being told what to do by Ace; Rev yes, Ace no. "Now," Ace turned to me, "anything you want to tell me, Lex?"
"What did he tell you?" I gestured towards Rev, who still was staring down at his palms. "Did he tell you that he was the one who started it?" I asked, "Did he happen to mention that he had done it more than once.. when I least expected it?"
"Lex-" Rev went to speak up but I held my hand up.
"He's the one who constantly falls for the ones you like so why wouldn't he try to kiss me multiple times?" I blurted out.
"You did what!?" Ace turned to Rev.
Shit.
"Listen man-" Rev went to say but Ace threw him against the wall.
"How the fuck did you let this happen twice?"
"It's not like I planned to do it!" He said back.
"Guys." I spoke out.
"Not now." Ace said to me before turning back towards Rev, who had been pressed up against the wall by Ace's forearm, "So what now? You're going to fuck this one up too.. make this one afraid of what's to come.. what you could do? Are you going t0-"
"Mars was never afraid of me." Rev spoke out.
"Marie was fucking terrified of you." Ace snarled back, "Why do you think she went along with the name Mars for so damn long?"
"That was the nickname she chose for herself, not me."
"That was the nickname you made her choose. You couldn't let anyone of the circle go along with their actual name.. we had to come up with our own nicknames to be called instead." He slammed Rev to the ground, "Just because you gave yourself a nickname to escape the history of your actual name doesn't mean we all wanted to do it."
"I didn't see you fight hard against giving yourself a nickname," Rev said to him, "Asa Colton Edwards."
Ace picked Rev up by the collar and slammed him onto the bed, leaning over top of him, "Don't you dare bring up that name again, Rowan Eric Vincent."
Rev flipped Ace so that he was on top, his hands squeezing his neck as the vein popped out on Rev's forehead, "What have I said about using that name?"
Did they just happen to forget I was still here? I grabbed Rev's forearm and yanked him off Ace before he caused yet another sudden tragedy.
"Get off of me." Rev tried to break out of my grip but I held on tighter.
"He's already in this damn hospital because of you." I stated, "Are you really about to make him worse than he already is?"
"He started it."
"Shut the fuck up, Rowan." I said to Rev.
Ace laughed.
"Don't you dare forget I have something against you as well, Asa." I told him.
"Don't."
"Your initials." I let go of Ace and stepped out of the way so I can look at the both of them, "I would have never pictured the two of you using your initials for a nickname. I don't know why but I just somehow figured that was your names, for some reason."
"You go by Lex." Rev stated.
"Yeah," I replied, "but that's short for Alexis. I just shortened it."
"Please don't call us by our names." Ace pleaded.
"You sure?"
"Lex." Rev growled.
I threw my hands up. "I won't. Trust me, I won't. I know very well how it feels to have a name you're ashamed of.. your secret will be safe with me, Asa," I turned to Rev with a smile, "and Rowan."
"That's it." Rev turned to Ace, "We have to kill her."
"No." Ace told him.
"You wouldn't want to kill me." I batted my eyelashes at Rev, "How else would you complete your circle, Rev?"
Ace turned his eyes towards the window before hopping back into bed, looking at the two of us, "Will I trust the both of you to leave together?"
"Ace, we just got here." I said to him.
"You saw me. I'm fine. Now you can go."
"What if we wanted to find out any new details about-"
"We'll go." Rev started pushing me out of the room until we were standing in the hallway.
"Rev, what the he-"
He placed his finger to his lips before saying something to Ace I couldn't get a chance to hear and closing the door behind him.
"Rev-"
He pushed me out of the way as a nurse entered Ace's room, keeping his head turned onto me.
"Rev?"
He placed his finger back on his lips until the door shut behind him, when he pushed me down the hall away from the room.
"Okay. That was just weird," I scoffed, "even for you."
"Sorry."
"Who the hell was that?" I asked him.
"Just some nurse." He shrugged it off.
Just some nurse? "Rev."
Looking panicked he tried to push me farther away but I held my ground.
"You knew that nurse, didn't you?"
"What?"
"That's why Ace told us to leave.. or why you didn't want to face her. You knew her, didn't you?"
"Lex."
"You date her too? Sleep with her? Threaten her or her family? Did you-"
"Lex."
"I'm just trying to figure out why you want to get away from his room before she exited again."
"We just have history."
"I knew it!'
"Not that kind of history, Lex."
"What other kind of history would you- Oh." Hospital history. "She was the nurse who-"
"Let's just go."
"Rev." I grabbed his hand, "You, out of all people, should know that I know exactly how you feel. Was she the one who-"
He let go of my hand, "Stop it, Lex."
"Alright." I followed him out towards his truck, "I was just-"
"I know what you were doing." He snarled, "I don't need your pity."
"Is that what you think I had for you?" I laughed.
He turned to face me, "You-"
"All I said was that I knew how you felt." I told him, "I lost a mother too. I'm sure if I was to face the nurse, or doctor, who took care of my mother I wouldn't want to face her either."
"Jesus, Lex." He said, "She didn't take care of my mother when she was dying."
"Then what the fuck was that all about?" I asked him.
"Let it go, Lex."
"No." I grabbed ahold of his hand so he couldn't just leave again, "You wanted me to somehow commit myself into your life.. here I am, committing myself into your life. Who the hell was that?"
"She slept with my father, alright."
Oh. That was not the turn I expected this to go. "That's it?"
"That's it?" He mocked my tone, "That woman not only slept with my father, but she constantly refused my mother's cries for help. Apparently my mother was a liar since the man who she 'claimed hurt her' was so sweet with that woman."
"Rev." I rubbed his knuckles.
"God, I made a pact with myself that I'd kill that woman the next time I saw her. That's why Rev wanted us to get out of there. Apparently she's his nurse and-"
"-and he was trying to keep you calm." I finished his sentence. Michael would've done the same thing for me if he knew Tex was back in my life. "He's your best friend, Rev." I told him, "You can fight it all you want, but that's exactly what a best friend does."
"Whatever." He headed back to his truck. "If you wanted to visit your father, I can wait for you."
"I'm okay." I found myself hopping back into his truck, "There's always next time."
He started up the vehicle as I leaned back on my seat. There's always next time. Why the hell did I say that? When has Rev ever offered to let me see my dad?
"Hey Rev." I turned to him.
"What's up?" He kept his focus ahead as he made his way out of the hospital parking lot.
"I'm sorry for telling Ace about the incident."
