Dreamer - Chapter 42
don't be fooled by what others tell you

"What did you mean.. earlier?" She asked me, "You said Ace wouldn't be too happy at something that happened between-"
Rev let off a cough, catching Mars eye.
"You didn't."
Silence.
"Tell me you didn't."
"Didn't what?" I played dumbed.
"How many of Ace's girls are you going to fall in love with, you dumbass?"
I stopped in my tracks, dropping the body at my feet. "What?"
"Mars, shut up." Rev responded back to her quietly.
"No." Mars dropped the body as well.
"Pick that back up."
"Why can't you just let Ace enjoy someone, for once?"
"Is nobody going to fill me in?" I chimed in, "I could've heard you say that there were others?"
"Well.." Mars said, "there was one other girl."
"Mars."
"She seriously thought Ace was the one who cared the most about her, until this dipshit came into view and made her feel like an angel."
"Who was this?" I asked mostly Rev, "What happened to her?"
"She became his top girl." Mars answered in his place, "He made it his top priority to make sure she could cater herself just to keep him satisfied; even if that meant changing her entire appearance."
Wait a second.
"If only she knew that, by changing her appearance, she would have to change her entire personality.. her name.. her-"
"You aren't talking about-"
"We're a lot similar than you'd think, Lex." She said to me.
No. No. She couldn't have belonged to Ace at one point. She has to be lying. She has to be making all this up to try and- why would she, though? My eyes glanced over at Rev who looked to be boiling now. If she was making this up.. why would he have gotten so angry over it? Why would he have been begging for her not to say anything before she did?
"Is this true?" I asked him.
"Let's just keep going."
"No." I slapped the body out of his grip, "Is what she said true?"
"So what if it was?"
"Am I just a fucking pawn to you?" I asked him, "Am I just a game you can play until you're bored and toss to the side once you're finished?"
"He's never going to just toss you aside," Mars said to me, "trust me on that. Embrace this power you carry; nobody else can ever do to him what you and I can do to him."
"Rev." I stared back at him.
"You aren't a pawn." He told me, "You're more than that."
"Wait for it." Mars told me, "He's about to say just how special you mean to him and how you've always been the one for him."
"No." He barked at her.
"Did you also tell her what you told me," I asked him, "that she was the final piece of the puzzle? Did you also tell her that you needed her to help complete the circle?"
"No." He went to grab me but I pulled myself away.
"He never told me that." Mars said to me, "That seems- That was never something you told me, Rev. Rev, you just dragged me along to your hangouts and told me I had to behave myself or else." She looked at the looks Rev and I shared between each other, "No, Lex, I think he- I think he meant that."
"How am I supposed to believe that!?"
"Because he has never looked at me the way he's looking at you."
My eyes glanced back over at Rev who just turned his eyes away and picked Gilbert's feet back up.
"We need to discard this." He changed the subject, "You two pick up your end and let's take care of this."
I couldn't help but watch Rev as he walked us to wherever it was he wanted to place the body. He was doing everything he could to avoid eye contact; something I've never once seen him do.
"No, Lex, I think he- I think he meant that."
"How am I supposed to believe that!?"
"Because he has never looked at me the way he's looking at you."
I kept hearing what Mars had said play over and over in my head.
He has never looked at me the way he's looking at you.
She couldn't have actually meant that, could she? Of course she couldn't. Of course Rev doesn't look at me differently. Why would he? My mind flashed back to all the moments I've shared with Rev; to all the times I've managed to convince Rev to get me out of the things he wanted me to do with him.
Rev, you just dragged me along to your hangouts and told me I had to behave myself or else.
According to Mars, Rev would have dragged her along with him wherever he went.. much similar to the way he gets with me. She mentioned how he'd tell her that she must behave herself; not really as similar as him and I. Of course.. Rev hates when I have said things I should not have, but he never really let him anger him as much. Or at least, he was good at not showing it. Hell. He has left the places he's "dragged" me to simply because I didn't feel like being there anymore.. or because I was clearly miserable.. or he didn't like the way it made me become.
No. No, Lex. He doesn't feel any different about you. Stop thinking about that. Stop thinking about him.. about what Mars had said. If he actually gave any shit about you, he would have never held a gun up to you.. he would have never aimed a bullet into your father.. or done anything to remotely hurt you.. if he truly cared about you, he wouldn't treat you like you weren't supposed to have any feeling in your heart.
"Drop the body right here." Rev broke me from my trance.
"Wha-" I let go of Gilbert's body just as Mars done. "Shouldn't we say something?" I asked.
"What?" Mars asked shockingly.
"What on Earth would we say?" Rev asked.
"I don't know." I shrugged, "But he was a person. He had a life much like us; he couldn't help that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. A very wrong time."
"No." Rev pulled out a lighter.
"You aren't going to at least bury him?" I touched Rev's arm before letting go quickly, "Gilbert had a family.. friends.. a very specific friend who-"
"I know what his circles were," Rev told me, "that's why I am doing this the way I am going to do this."
"Rev, we're in the middle of nowhere." Mars said, "You really think you have to do this?"
"I have no other choice."
"You could call for help."
Both Mars and Rev looked at me in shock; as if the words I just spoke were a disgrace to their kind.
"Not like that," I added, "Just.. call an ambulance.. tell the paramedics that you just found him like this.. nobody ever needs to know what-"
"We already moved the body, Lex." Mars replied, "Plus, it's not like we'd be saving him. He was already dead."
He was already dead. The words I wish I didn't have to hear. My eyes jotted back down to Gilbert just as Rev threw a flame onto his lifeless body; all those times spent in class with him flashed through my head. It's pretty sad that was all I got to share with him but it was something.
After a few minutes, Rev began stomping out each flame with his shoe.
Mars began helping him out, "You better get stomping, Lex. The fire isn't going to let out itself."
No way. I stood back, watching as the two of them just stomping the burnt leftovers of Gilbert's body until all the flames slowly began to die out. Idiots. "Who the hell stomps out a flame with just their shoe?" I accidently spoke out loud.
"What was that?" Rev asked.
"Nothing."
"We can't let anyone else find the flame." Mars answered, mocking Rev's usual tone, "Otherwise, what was the point of lighting the victim on fire?"
Rev began walking towards where his truck had been parked in the distance and Mars took my arm in hers before she began to follow.
"Don't worry, Lex," she said to me, "this wouldn't be your last."
