Secrets are all around. Little white lies, small fibs or surprise parties. Secrets can be good or bad. When they are good it ends with a smile. When they are bad it ends with a life being changed. Some secrets are unavoidable while some are choices being made. Some secrets though are so big and bad that drastic measures need to be taken once they come to light.
Trevor stared out the balcony window enjoying the colors only a sunset can bring. He sighed and smiled. He had a great life and was so happy to have it. Only this great life came at a cost, one he gladly paid and would do again. Shaking off his thoughts he turned around and looked around his room. His fiancé was still sleeping in the bed, blankets wrapped around her. She was beautiful in every sense of the word, inside and out. Trevor knew as soon as he saw her that he had to have her. However she was seeing someone then, but it didn’t matter because Trevor always got what he wanted.
Kim stretched and looked around the room. Her fiancé was already up and looking at her, which wasn’t unusual. Little did she know the secret he kept, but soon she would find out.
“Morning beautiful,” Trevor said sitting down next to Kim.
“So what are the plans for today,” Kim asked sitting up giving Trevor a kiss.
“Well we could go pick out the flowers for our big day or we could just make a day sight seeing.”
“Don’t you have to work?”
“The joys of being my own boss,” he said grinning.
“We could do both, although we have done a lot of sight seeing lately there isn’t much left to see.” Kim said getting out of bed and grabbing clothes for the day.
“Oh there is plenty left to see. I’ll go start breakfast.” Trevor said giving Kim a kiss before walking out the door.
Kim watched him walk out, happy to have him in her life. Trevor came into her life at just the right moment. She was in a bad relationship but no one knew about it and then she met Trevor. Not one to cheat and to scared to end things normally Kim just waited. Her ex went missing though and she didn’t know exactly what happened, no one did. It had been a year and still nothing. So Kim decided to move on. Trevor was there with her through it all. They started as friends and became more. Kim loved her life.
Trevor and Kim were walking along the sidewalk when they got a breaking news report on their phones.
“A partial body was found today at the Greencove forest. No further information is available at this time but authorities are closing the roadways and entry to the forest.”
“Oh wow, that’s crazy.” Kim said.
“Yeah it is. I wonder who it is?”
“I don’t know there haven’t been many missing persons around her. Plus the forest is huge so it could be from another town or anyone really.”
“That’s true. Let’s head home. It might get crazy soon.”
Trevor and Kim walked back to their house in silence. A million things were going through Trevor’s mind. It wasn’t possible but it could be the secret he had been keeping was about to come out. Maybe he should tell Kim and get it over with before it comes out. Then again there was no evidence that lead to him. Plus like Kim said it could be anybody.
Kim was worried. She was worried that Trevor’s secret was about to come out. She found out several months ago before he proposed. Kim didn’t care. After what her ex put her through she thought about it herself. She thought about telling him but also wanted deniability if it came back on him. However it could be anybody.
A few weeks passed and the partial body was going nowhere. There were no leads and no one knew who it was. Trevor and Kim knew though but didn’t come forward. Kim knew she had to come clean to Trevor about knowing what he did. She could tell it was eating him up inside and she didn’t want any secrets between them before they got married.
“I need to tell you something.” They both said in unison.
“You first,” Trevor said.
“No you. It might contradict what I have to say.”
“Um okay… Well its about the body. I knew who it is and I’m sorry but its Jacob.”
“Oh I know its him. I recognized the birthmark on his side. And I know what you did to him.”
“What? How? And why aren’t you more upset?”
“I was there the night you killed him. I was locked in the closet. See the thing about Jacob is he was an abusive, narcissistic psychopath. I didn’t tell anyone because I was too scared too. But I guess you figured it out.”
“Yeah. I mean I didn’t mean to kill him but I… uh…” Trevor stammered.
“Shh, its okay. I understand. You were protecting me. Now I can protect you. We both have this secret now.” Kim said hugging Trevor.
Trevor hugged her back and smiled. Yes, now we both have this secret, he thought.
