You texted me, “Don’t forget that we were meeting today. Do you mind if I bring Cindy along? She’s the new transfer from Florida that’s in our class.”
I texted back, “I thought you said you didn’t know her? But Okay, I think that would be nice.”
“I didn’t until yesterday. She seems really nice.” You replied.
Shortly after 11:00, I walked into the small library, it was full of people already. I wasn’t much for crowds but I told you I’d meet with you to discuss our class project. Our deadline was 2 weeks away and we didn’t even have a topic yet.
You walked in shortly after me. I waved you down and you pulled up a chair next to me. Your backpack landed hard on the floor and you sat down heavy, with an equally heavy sigh. The quick movements stirred the air, you smelled really good. It was going to be hard to concentrate.
“Everything okay?” I asked
“Just tired, I was up late studying for a 'do or die' exam that I have coming up on Monday.” You sighed.
“Those suck. If you need someone to throw questions at you, I’d be more than happy to help.” I said cheerfully.
“Thanks, I might take you up on that.” You smiled at me.
It felt like that smile had more behind it than just being a companion to a polite response. Was she flirting with me? Did I see a wink? I always liked her, but I didn’t know if she was into me, or girls for that matter. I was so happy when we were paired together for this project. I had two weeks of time to spend with her. This makes me extremely happy. And now that I think she might be into me, well, that could be a game changer.
Then I noticed that the new girl wasn’t with her and asked if she was coming. When you shrugged and said that she wasn’t able to this time, I was so happy. I wondered if she noticed? We took out our notebooks and got to work. After a few effortless minutes, we had our topic. Now for the hard part. As we opened our laptops and started our searches, I would glance over at you. I couldn’t concentrate with you so close. Your left hand was resting on the table while your right hand scrolled pages with the mouse. I wanted to take your hand. My mind started to wander from my computer and went into another world with you.
We were no longer in the library. We found ourselves on the campus lawn in the shade under a big tree. There was no one around. We were on a blanket and you were reading a book. You peeked over the top edge of the pages at me. I could see you smiling with your eyes. It sent warm chills through my body. I leaned forward, took my index finger and rested it on the top of the book and slowly pushed it down to expose your full smile. I shifted to sit beside you. You immediately rested your hand on my right thigh just above my knee. You turned your head and looked into my eyes. There was a moment of nerves and then we both leaned in and…
BAM! My daydream jumped back into reality as a student walking by accidentally kicked my chair leg. I looked at you, and my cheeks felt warm. If only you realized where I went for a moment. Not to seem spaced out, I asked you what you found so far.
“Nothing worth noting.” You said.
“That’s ok, I’m getting hungry. How about a bite to eat?” I asked.
“Sounds great. Let’s go.” You said. Then you suggested we grab a pizza and take it back to your room.
I jumped up at the thought of being alone with you in private. Alone. This day couldn’t get any better. Or could it? We packed up and headed out. You decided to just order one once we got there. We made it to your room. I was feeling a little nervous now. I was still unsure of how you felt about me. We stepped inside. I noticed that your side of the room was well kept. The bed was made with cute little throw pillows along the side of the bed up against the wall. The room was not too small but it didn’t leave room for a lot of furniture, so there weren’t any chairs. You gestured to your bed and we sat down. Side by side again. Only this time behind closed doors. It wasn’t just my cheeks that felt warm now. You grabbed your phone and turned on some music, which sounded through your speaker on the nightstand. The awkward silence was drowned out by familiar favorites. I was feeling more relaxed. You appeared to be relaxing as well. You set your phone down and rested your hand on the bed between us. I think the pizza was forgotten about.
I didn’t want to be too obvious about my feelings, so I put my hand right next to yours as I made small talk. I think you noticed though. You put your hand next to mine and I felt your pinky brush against mine. A prickly trail shot up my arm. Don’t overreact, don’t overreact. It might not mean anything. I glanced down at our hands to feel out the situation. It was now or never. I slowly moved my pinky to brush against yours. My heart was racing now. Then your pinky slid up over mine. It was like I just touched an electrical socket, as the tingling feeling shot throughout my entire body. By the time I looked up at you, your hand had encompassed mine and you scooped it up and laced your fingers through mine. I thought my heart would explode. I took a deep breath and held it for what seemed like forever.
“I hope this is ok. I have always liked you, and was hoping I was right about you liking me. I’m sure you’ve guessed by now that I wasn’t going to order a pizza." You said as your voice tapered into a whisper. "At least not at the moment.”
My breath quickly escaped and my body froze. Your face was inches from mine now. I replied with a smile, because that’s all I could do at that moment. A small giggle slipped my lips.
"I'll take that as a yes." she said through a wide smile. Then we leaned into each other. Our lips brushed together and I just melted into you.
