Daughter of Nyx

I could hear Saria's heart beating ever faster as we got closer to the end of the dark cavern. She was starting to hyperventilate up until I grabbed her hand and held it tight.

Calm yourself.

She took a deep, silent breath and her muscles started to relax. Her translucent wings stopped fluttering as well and relaxed themselves down her back. She was nervous and scared, but I don't blame her.

Getting back to the colony is the most important thing. And she can't be lost during this mission. It would be a failure on my end.

We continued creeping through the cavern and up ahead was a faint light. As we moved closer, she was starting to grow nervous again. I could hear her wings start to flutter.

I turned to her with my finger to my lips motioning for her to calm down yet again. Reaching the end of the cavern and the very obviously trapped opening, I could see the colony beyond the clearing.

I've never not gone with my gut feeling, however, this felt like an off decision that would only affect me. She is my mission though, so I should just go through with it. I pulled her next to me and signed to her about the colony beyond the clearing but that it could be a trap being out in the open.

She understood but she was still ready to take the risk. I saw her ears twitch. Someone was either in here with us or outside waiting. Probably both. I didn't have a particular plan but we both knew what to do.

We ran.

As we crossed the clearing I heard a high pitched whine in the air.

An arrow.

I turned around and drew my sword, cutting it in half before it reached her back. Yes she has wings. Yes she can fly. But it made her more of a target, especially if anyone here had a sniper rifle. As we approached the edge of the clearing, that gut feeling came back into play.

It just felt all too easy. The colony was only a few steps away and I pulled Saria in front of me and pushed her over the line into the colony before she and it disappeared in front of me. And as it did, there on what would have been the other side was the one I feared would be here.

And I took that bullet to the head.

My memories were in and out then. I saw a city. I saw people. Were we floating? Were these aliens? There were diamonds and mountains. It was all so blurry and out of focus. I couldn't grab onto a particular memory and make sense of it. They felt like clips of movies I'd seen but I was the star in all of them.

"Xanna!"

I finally snapped out of it. I was in some dimly lit room with a small group of people staring at me as I sat in the corner, half sleep with my head tilted against the wall.

"Look, we know you were in the Wandering City. We just want to know where." A red headed girl stated and she was the one who I had been ignoring. She was the one talking the most.

I'm sorry? Why the hell should I help you? You're the government right? Why would I want to help the fucking government?

They all looked at each other. They seemed both confused and concerned.

"We thought if we said we were the government you'd help us, since you technically work for them anyway."

Wrong on 2 fronts.

"I think you'll want to help us."

3 fronts.

She walked over to the metal table the separated us and slammed a book down on it.

"I can guarantee a change of your. You're the ONLY daughter of the only assassin that ever lived to not only visit these places and see these creatures but also WRITE about them. If you want this book and those places to remain secret and safe, you'll help us."

They had it. They had the Assassin's Diary. Written by my mother thousands of years ago. Named after the Goddess of the Night with the powers of Hecate.

My Mother.

Nyx.
