`Chapter 2: The Situation

Bang bang bang!

Zhu Mingrui looked at the mirror and took a few steps back in fear, feeling like the person in the mirror wasn't himself but a zombie.

Who could survive being injured so badly?

He tilted his head to the side, trying to check again. Despite the distance and the dim light, he could still clearly see the bullet wound and the bright red blood.

"Here..."

Zhu Mingrui took a deep breath, trying to calm down.

He placed his hand on his left chest, feeling his heart beating fast and strong, full of vitality. When he touched his skin, he felt cold but warm inside.

He sat down to check his knee before standing up, no longer panicking.

"What's going on?" He frowned, silently asking and intending to check the wound again.

He took two steps but suddenly stopped, because the red moonlight outside wasn't bright enough to check thoroughly.

A memory flashed, Zhou Mingrui turned towards the gas lamp covered with an iron mesh, near the desk, where there was a gray-white gas pipe.

This gas lamp was very common, the flame was stable and gave off good light.

With Klein Moretti's family situation, even an oil lamp was a luxury, only candles were suitable for the family's status. However, four years ago, when he stayed up all night studying for the Hoy University entrance exam, his older brother, Benson, decided to lend him money to create the best learning conditions for him because this was important for the whole family's future.

Benson, who had studied and worked for many years, was not a thoughtless person. He persuaded the landlord to spend money to renovate the gas pipe system and buy a new gas lamp at almost the original price. In the end, he only used his own savings without having to borrow from anyone.

The memory ended, Zhou Mingrui returned to the desk, opened the pipe and turned the lamp's latch.

Crackle, the sound of ignition rang out, but the light did not shine as he expected.

Crackle, he turned it a few more times but the light was still dark.

"Um..." Zhou Mingrui paused, wondering about the cause from the fragments of memory.

After a few seconds, he walked to the gray-white gas pipe connected device next to the door.

It was the gas meter!

Looking at the bearing and gears on the outside, Zhou Mingrui took out a coin from his pocket.

The coin was yellowed, shining with a copper color. The front side had a picture of a man wearing a crown, the back side had wheat surrounding the number "1".

He knew that this was a penny, the basic currency of the Ruen Kingdom, equivalent to three or four Yuan in the place where he lived. There were three types of pennies: 5 pennies, half pennies, and quarter pennies, but in daily life, people still had to collect enough to buy things.

Chu Minh Thuy rolled the penny between his fingers for a while and then put it into the "mouth" of the gas meter.

Clang!

As the penny fell to the bottom of the meter, the sound of gears turning rang out, creating a short but pleasant melody.

He stared at it for a few seconds and then turned back to his desk, turning the knob to turn on the lamp.
