There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. In fact, almost everyone believed they went extinct 20 years ago, along with the entire pyromancer population. Everyone except me and my best friend, who shouldn’t exist, Darius. Wow, that sounded pretty harsh. I think introductions are necessary in order to give you a better understanding of what I meant by that.
My name is Onofria. I’m the daughter of Thema, Queen of the Wizard World and Paragon Necromancer. 20 years ago, just a few days after bringing me into the world, my mother lead the charge on a war against the pyromancers. She insisted that pyromancer power could only be used for destruction. She was resolute in the idea that all they could and would burn down everything that stood in their way. Every other type of wizard began to believe the notions she was spewing; and soon after, they decided to act. Two decades ago, an army consisting of every full-fledged adult wizard stormed the Pyromancer Province. From what I’ve been told, it was apparent that they were not expecting this attack. It was over in under an hour. The Pyromancer legacy should have ended there. However, there ended up being one survivor of the devastating massacre.
I met Darius on the night of my 18th birthday. Earlier that evening, I was forced to sit in on one of Thema’s meetings with the Wizard World Counsel. Of course, I was expected to start taking on more responsibilities at that age because I would one day take Thema’s spot as Queen of the Wizard World. However, I wasn’t prepared for the ugly truth that would be revealed to me. The Pyromancer’s didn’t actually pose a threat to everyone else’s wellbeing. Thema only destroyed them because they refused to join what is now known as the Wizard World. They wanted to continue on independently; free of the politics that were guaranteed to come with the united Wizard World. Thema could not allow this. She decided then that if they continued to refuse submission, they would have to perish. I ran away that night. I had too. My entire identity collapsed. I wasn’t the daughter of a hero after all; I was the daughter of a murderer. I escaped into the forest, but it wasn’t long before I became lost. I decided to lay down on the cold, fluffy snow and listen to the creatures of the night scurry around in the surrounding woods. I’m not entirely sure when it happened, but I lost my will to continue on. I decided that I would allow myself to succumb to nature. I shut my eyes and waited for my good friend, death to visit. I was amusing myself with the thought of Death arriving, only to find out it was me he would be taking, when suddenly, I had felt a warmth growing in front of me. My eyes opened quickly and that’s when I caught my first sight of him. My soon-to-be best friend.
It wasn’t hard to figure out that Darius was the last surviving Pyromancer. He saved my life that day. I would have surely frozen to death if not for him. It was clear to me that there was a cosmic reason we met that day. I was the only one who knew the truth about the Pyromancer’s, and Darius was the last one left. I had to help him.
For the past two years, Darius and I have been plotting a rebellion against Thema. However, even with numerous wizards joining the rebellion every day, we knew we were fiercely outnumbered. We needed an ace up our sleeve to even dream of pulling out a win against Thema. Six months ago, Darius set out to find that ace. Today, I’m staring at it in awe and amazement. We’ve already pulled off what no one thought possible, and we’re just getting started. Darius pulled up next to me on a mighty blue dragon and sweetly smiled at me.
“Are you ready for this Fria?” He questioned in a concerned voice.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” I asked while raising an eyebrow.
“She’s your moth-“
“She’s a murderer.” I cut him off sternly. “She’s deceitful, and I won’t let her get away with what she did to your family.”
He didn’t have a response to this. Instead, he reached down to pull me up onto the Herculean beast.
“Let the adventure begin.” He whispered into my ear. I could feel the goosebumps form on the back of my neck. A panic filled my heart, because as much as I cared for this man, Thema was not the only one being deceitful.
