Death by Chocolate Sparks

She sat in that tiny, little coffee shop at that tiny, little table contemplating her tiny, little life. She was stuck in a rut. Her mind tearing at the seams, grasping for anything that would hold her to this life.

If it wasn't one thing it was another. It’s like she could never catch a break. Every time she came up for air the waves took her right back under. Her lungs burning, yearning for oxygen.

She looked timidly around the cafe, with her long, curly brown hair in her eyes, masking the pain she knew was slowly drowning her. She looked back down at her hands as she fidgeted. Nobody here would ever love her the same way. Nobody would ever look at her with such passion. It wasn’t possible for another human being to be out there that could create the same beautiful spark. That love could only be once in a lifetime.

She thought back to the day they met. A day full of color and wonder. A magical moment that when Meaghn pulled up and stepped out of her car into the sunlight it was like an Angel had stepped into the light. She couldn’t breathe, she couldn’t speak except for one little word that changed everything, “Wow”. That was the girl of her dreams.

Just like that another wave swept her under. She went from sparkling light to pure darkness. The one person she wanted to spend her life with no longer felt the same. All the jokes they’d made together no longer seemed as funny. The light touches that created such fire in her a year ago were only dull embers now.

She couldn’t make herself get up from the table. She couldn’t make herself walk out that door. This was where they had their first date. This table was where Meaghn had asked her to be her girlfriend. Out at the pond behind the cafe, in her line of sight, was where Meaghn had told her that she loved her for the very first time. How could she possibly walk away from that? This tiny, little cafe was all that she had left. The memories becoming numb and no longer allowing her to feel. She could only feel the bitter cold wind of rejection.

She imagined Meaghn walking back through that door, sitting down at their table, grabbing her hands, and asking for another chance. She imagined saying yes and feeling that spark flicker again when their hands touched. She imagined this recreation of the most epic love story. What a dream that would be. And that’s all it was, a dream. She’d never find that one person meant for her. That one person had already walked out of her life because they were too different. Meaghn had said they were cut from two different cloths and just wouldn’t work. But how could she possibly know that? She never really tried.

The bell chimed as the door opened and she popped her head up hoping, just praying it would be the one person who made her world spin. In walked a cute little girl holding her mama’s hand. What a picture that was. What a wrecking ball to her heart that was. They were supposed to have that. A family, a house, a yard. It was all supposed to be theirs. She should be a mom right now. Instead she’s sitting at a table full of memories, full of laughter, and now full of sorrow and guilt.

They could have had a beautiful life together. Now, Meaghn is happy with some dude and she’s still here, by herself. “What a waste of a life,” she thought. “Not like anyone would miss me anyway.”

A soft rustle beside her made her jerk her head up. A beautiful blonde with ocean green eyes looked back at her as she placed a piece of chocolate cake in front of her. “I just wanted to tell you that you matter.” She looked into those ocean green eyes and she knew. She couldn’t take her eyes away from those sparks flying in those beautiful eyes. She’d found her person, and all it took was a piece of chocolate cake.
