When her cat disappeared, I wasn’t there. Words of hope uttered through a phone - inadequate consolation for my child’s heartbreak.

Guilt driven, I find her solace in a magical book.

She places Temptations and toys under the trampoline. Her irritated father says it’s not healthy, but she ignores him (as I do), and continues her prayerful bouncing over the cool spot where KitKat used to lay.

Exhausted, she sits beside me.

Waiting.

Until the grass finally flattens into a familiar shape, and her consuming grief is lightened by a ghostly purr.
