Computer Love

In real life, nobody had ever seen him

By David E. PerryPublished 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago 1 min read

His name was Jonathan Packer. He just walked out of Pinehurst Bank with $25 million. Nobody tried to stop him. Nobody called the police. Nobody chased after him. The security guard even opened the door.

“Have a nice day, Mr. Packer.” The bank owner said. “We hope to see you soon.”

The odd thing is that Jonathan Packer exists only in the computers. In real life, nobody had ever seen him.

The plan was flawless. Create a fictitious character, give him a phony social security number, and a fake ID. Little by little, transfer the $500 Million of stolen money from an overseas account. So, when Jeff Palmer walked into the bank requesting a small withdrawal, nobody seemed to be the least bit suspicious. He had the ID. He had the documentation. He had all he needed to pass as Jonathan Packer.

Mr. Palmer, sorry, I mean Mr. Packer, walked to his car with a briefcase containing the large sum of money. He smiled as the valet opened the car door for him. He got into the car only to be placed in hand cuffs.

“You must realize, Mr. Palmer, computer crimes do leave a paper trail.”
