Christmas Eve in North America

On Christmas Eve, three wise friends, Karl, William, and James, gather on a Microsoft Teams video call, speaking about their best friend, Jack, a sociologist of religion. Tragedy has struck: Jack was hit by a speeding car while grabbing lunch, losing critical amounts of blood. His family has donated, but he still needs more. Without it, he won’t survive.

A Call Across Continents

Karl, in Asia, asks, “How did it happen?”

William, in Africa, explains, “Jack was struck just hours ago. He lost several pints of blood and needs a transfusion; without it, he will die.”

James, in Europe, immediately asks, “How can we help?”

Their answer is clear. They must go to him.

Karl declares, “He is our friend; I will come. My private jet will take me to Washington, D.C. I will give him my blood.”

William agrees, saying, “I, too, will give my blood. I’ll take the supersonic aircraft; I’ll be there in two hours.”

James follows suit: “I will catch the next international flight to DC. I am ready to help.”

A Gift of Life

The three wise friends embark on their journey, carrying with them their ultimate offering, their blood, so that Jack may live. Jack had once made sacrifices for them, guiding them out of the depths of their past struggles, Karl from opioid addiction, William from homelessness, and James from alcoholism.

Jack led them to education, stability, and a brighter future.

Now, it is their turn to sacrifice. They traverse continents, disrupting their own lives to save the friend who saved them.

Christmas morning dawned in Washington, D.C.; the city hushed beneath a blanket of snow.

Inside the hospital, Jack lay pale and fragile, his life hanging by a thread. Doctors rushed to prepare for the transfusions, astonished by the arrival of three men from three continents, united by friendship and faith that their blood offering would save Jack’s life.

The Blood Drawn

Karl was the first to step forward to have his blood taken from is arm, whispering, “This is for the man who helped to get me off of drugs and back my life.”

William followed, his eyes glistening with gratitude, recalling nights when Jack’s counsel had lifted him from despair.

James, the last to offer his blood, remembered the day Jack had walked him out of a bar and into a classroom, insisting that his story was not yet over.

Their blood flowed into Jack, each pint a testament to loyalty, sacrifice, and love. As the hours passed, color returned to his cheeks, and his breathing grew stronger. By noon, the doctors declared the miracle: Jack would live.

The three friends gathered at his bedside, exhausted yet triumphant.

Hope Restored

Outside, church bells rang, announcing Christmas Day. For them, the sound was more than tradition, it was a proclamation of hope.

As Jack opened his eyes, weak but smiling, he whispered, “You gave me life.” The friends clasped his hand, knowing their sacrifice had turned Christmas into a living miracle of love.

In that moment, they understood: the true gift of Christmas was not gold, frankincense, or myrrh, but the gift of life itself, given freely by friends who loved him without measure.
