The train pulled into the station bringing with it a gust of hot air. The passengers did not mind, a warm summer evening and the gust cooled them down even the slightest bit. Jackie was waiting for the same train on her way home from work. While on the train, she checked her favorite bakery to see if there was anything she liked remaining. They always kept up to date with their inventory on their website. While she was searching, the train shook and another woman fell into Jackie knocking her phone out of her hands.

“Excuse me” the woman said looking embarrassed.

Jackie smiled and help the woman back to her feet at the same time looking down for her phone. The woman found it and handed it back to her. When she did, both of their eyes lit up.

“Jackie?”

“Paula?”

The two women knew each other from college. They had classes together and had lost touch toward the end of senior year when Jackie moved into a more administrative program and Paula stayed in the hands on program, both being in the educational field.

The two women caught up with each other while on the train exchanging stories of what they remember from college and what life has been like since. Jackie had finished reminding Paula of a time when the two most got in trouble in college when Paula looked down and saw the bakery on Jackie's phone.

“That's my favorite bakery! Have you been there before?”

Jackie looked surprised that Paula knew of this bakery. It had not been open for long.

“Yes, I love this place. Not is their food good, but they keep their inventory up to date online. What is your favorite dessert?”

Paula thought for a second “it has to be the chocolate cake. I could eat that every day for the rest of my life.”

“Same here, I have tried other bakeries but can't find anything that comes close to their chocolate cake.”

Jackie turned to her phone and look for how much chocolate cake was at the bakery. When the screen loaded it said that there was one slice of chocolate cake remaining for the day. Jackie grew concerned and Paula could read that right off her face. Paula looked down at Jackie's phone and saw the reason why she was nervous, then got up from her seat.

“Well this is my stop. It's great seeing you again. We should get lunch sometime.”

Jackie thought this was sudden but did not make a big deal out of it.

“We so should. It's been too long”

The two hugged and Paula walked toward the doors. Jackie sat back down as the train pulled into the next station. Looking down at her phone she realized why Paula had ended the conversation so abruptly. Then she noticed that the bakery was between this station in the next, and jumped from her seat. Paula noticed Jackie moving toward her and as soon as the door is opened the two sprinted off of the train.

The chase was on, each one trying to beat the other to get the last piece of chocolate cake at their favorite bakery. The station was underground and as Paula reach the stairs she knocked over a garbage can. She rolled it towards Jackie to slow her down. Jackie was not able to run fast in her heels so easy for her to slow down as the garbage can approached her but this gave Paula the lead, and she was up the stairs to the street before Jackie started going up.

Knowing that she had to catch up to Paula, Jackie took off her heels and held them as she ran. They were not expensive, but they meant a lot to her. She had worn them times and gotten compliments while wearing them.

Paula was moving fine in her flats, but Jackie was closing in quick. The bakery was two blocks away, and she knew that Jackie would pass her in no time. While she was thinking Jackie caught up to her on her right side and as the two turn right onto the next block, Jackie bumped Paula into a hot dog cart on the corner. The vendor shouted at Paula but all she could see was Jackie's smile as she pulled away toward the bakery.

Racing down the block, all Jackie could taste that last piece of chocolate cake, and she would eat it in front of Paula who thought she could outsmart her. As she passed a flower stand she tripped and fell flat on her face. The florist had been watering the flowers and Jackie tripped over the hose without noticing.

“Are you alright?” the florist asked.

Jackie did not respond, she saw Paula closing in on her. Thinking , Jackie grabbed the hose from the florist and started spraying. Raising her hands toward face, Paula stopped and blocked the water as she turned her head away. Right before Jackie was about to make a run for it she backed up and tripped over the hose one more time dropping the hose.

As the florist went to help her up, Paula grabbed the hose and started spraying Jackie with the florist caught in the way. The florist backed up out of the line of fire and Jackie laid on her back with her arms out front trying to block the water.

Paula kept spraying Jackie until the florist took the hose from her. Then she took off down the street and turn left toward the bakery. Jackie got up and start running towards Paula knowing that she would never catch her at time. Jackie stop running and sat on the sidewalk looking aggravated. She stood to signal for a cab when she noticed an alley between the buildings. Her eyes lit up knowing that it's in the same direction as the bakery, and she took off again.

she would have been scared going down alley like this in the city but the thing on her mind was beating Paula to that last piece of chocolate cake. At the end of the alley she realized she was at the back of the bakery.

One of the employees walked out the back door holding a bag of day old donuts and was walking toward the dumpster when she ran through the door, into the kitchen and out in front of the display case. As she got in line, she noticed Paula was entering the bakery. The two Sprint towards the front of the line bumping into the customer.

Looking at the Baker the two scream at the same time “ONE PIECE OF CHOCOOLATE CAKE PLEASE!”

The Baker looked startled and asked the two women to please calm down.

“Ladies please wait in line there're guests ahead of you, but so you know we are all out of chocolate cake for the day. The woman that you bumped into ordered the last piece.”

The Baker pointed to the woman leaving the bakery. At that moment Paula and Jackie both looked at each other and then sprinted for the door at the same time screaming “EXCUSE ME MISS, HOW MUCH FOR YOUR CHOCOLATE CAKE!?”
